Homewatch CareGivers Seek Walkers for Arthritis Foundation Fundraiser

Homewatch CareGivers of Essex, Morris & Union Counties invites the area residents to join their team for the Arthritis Foundation's "Let's Move Together" Walk in Verona Park on May 2. If you can't walk with them, they ask you to consider making a donation. Arthritis is a painful condition that affects 46 million adults and nearly 300,000 children.

Homewatch CareGivers, based in South Orange, is also one of the Walk's sponsors. The company provides a wide range of care services for seniors and others.

Leight Family to be honored at the Everyone CARES Gala

Kelly, Adam, Alyssa & Joshua Leight will receive CARES Foundation's Visionary Award at the Everyone CARES Gala on March 18. Kelly and Adam Leight founded CARES Foundation in 2000 after their child was diagnosed with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). Since that time, CARES has grown to support over 6,000 affected individuals, family members and healthcare professionals across the United States and abroad. CARES Foundation is the only organization in the United States solely devoted to supporting those who are affected by this adrenal disorder.

Under Ms. Leight's leadership, CARES Foundation succeeded in persuading all 50 US states and many countries abroad to implement life-saving newborn screening for the disease and to expand screening for many other diseases as well. She organized seven CAH conferences that educated over two thousand people about living with CAH. Several editorials written by Ms. Leight were published in medical journals. She was recognized for her work with CARES by Pfizer, Inc. in April, 2005 receiving their first "Unsung Hero" award presented by soccer star, Mia Hamm. Ms. Leight is a sought after speaker and recognized lay expert on newborn screening for adrenal hyperplasia.

Adam Leight served on the CARES Board of Trustees for eight years, serving in various capacities on the Executive Board, including Vice-President and Treasurer. Mr. Leight is Managing Director and Head of High Yield Research at RBC Capital Markets. He joined RBC in 2008, and has logged almost 30 years of experience covering the Oil & Gas industry. In recognition of his strong client franchise, he has been named to the Institutional Investor "All-America Fixed Income Research Team" 19 times, including six times as the #1 ranked Energy analyst.

Mr. Leight is a member of the Executive Board of Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel, has been a member of the University of Wisconsin School of Business ASAP Fixed Income Advisory Board, and has served as an officer or director of other non-profit organizations.

Joshua and Alyssa Leight have been integral participants in CARES since it began in the Leight's basement 10 years ago. Alyssa became the inspiration for CARES Foundation after she was diagnosed with CAH at the age of 7. Ever since then, CARES has been a family venture with both Josh and Alyssa helping out whenever needed. Alyssa wrote stories for the newsletter, shared her story with others by speaking on the telephone, meeting or corresponding with other kids with CAH and spoke at events. Josh and Alyssa held bake sales, sold CARES bracelets, babysat and entertained kids at CARES conferences, stuffed envelopes and cooked dinner when Mom had to work late.

Alyssa is now a senior in high school at Newark Academy, and has been accepted to Barnard College of Columbia University for next fall. Joshua graduated from Brown University last May. He lives in New York City and is an associate at Nomura Corporate Research and Asset Management in New York.

Bev Sheehan performs at Celebrity Readings party

Actor Bev Sheehan had something she wanted to get off her chest with a supportive adult audience on Sunday afternoon. It wasn't exactly her own issue, though, more precisely a performance of Nora Ephron's Esquire essay "A Few Words About Breasts."

Sheehan entertained guests with the humorous essay at a kickoff event for Celebrity Readings, the Adult School fundraiser that pairs actors with great stories. The Adult School presents these performances to help fund adult education, children's summer camp, and English as a Second Language classes.

On April 12, the Adult School is delighted to present award-winning actors Christine Ebersole (Tonys for "Grey Gardens," "42nd Street"), Anthony Chisholm (August Wilson legacy, "Gem of the Ocean" and "Oz" on HBO), and radio personality Isaiah Sheffer (NPR's "Selected Shorts") at the Woman's Club of Maplewood. Actor Emily Zacharias will serve as the evening's host.

On Sunday afternoon the stage belonged to Sheehan, the artistic director of What Exit? Theater Co. in Maplewood. Her most recent stage role was in "Rising Water," a drama about a husband and wife trapped in their attic during Hurricane Katrina at the Playwright's Theatre in Madison. Sheehan is a voice-over actor and was one of the voices on the award-winning PBS documentary series "Wide Angle."

The "BARRACUDAS" need your help!

The Special Olympics Area 3 Swim team are once again collecting donations of Homemade knitted and crocheted scarves for our 3rd annual fundraiser.

Due to your past generosity we have been able to raise over $500.00 each year selling all the beautiful donated scarves. All monies raised go the pay for our lifeguard, swim suits, and other team clothing. Please if you have the time, knit and crochet a scarf to help keep our kids AFLOAT! Thank you!

Marilyn Troiano, 77, Retired from La Salon

Marilyn Troiano (nee Tischio) of Garwood, formerly of Cranford, died on Mar. 2 at Overlook Hospital. She was 77. Born in Newark, Troiano was born and raised in Newark, graduating from South Side High School. She later lived in Cranford and Garwood. While still in school, she began working as a manicurist with Solly & Louis in downtown Newark. She was a manicurist for more than 60 years and spent most of her career with La Salon & Spa in Millburn. Troiano was active in Cranford as a member of the Cranford Improvement Association, the Suburban Women's Bowling League and Weight Watchers. She also knitted afghan blankets for nursing and veterans' homes. Troiano enjoyed her retirement and frequented Atlantic City, where she played the penny slots.

Express Yourself Studios located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood has several events slated for March 2010. All are invited to take part in one or more of the studio's events. Events are geared toward adults, families and children and include the following:

Spring Session Art Classes & Workshop Enrollment
March 1 – March 26

Express Yourself Studios, A Space to Create located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood is currently accepting enrollment for its Winter art classes (January – March). Classes are available for adults and children and are offered in 6 week sessions. All materials are included, and there is a wide variety of classes to choose from. Kids' classes include: Drawing & Painting, Media Mix, and Sculpture. Adult classes include Acrylics, Watercolor and Pastel Workshops as well as Altered Books. Spring Art Classes begin March 29 and runs through May 7.

Experience Acrylics Workshop

Acrylic painting is a perfect medium for both the beginner and the experienced artist who wants to try something new. Anything that oils can do, acrylic can do! Learn the basics of mixing colors, blending and a variety of acrylic painting techniques with artist Rosalia Tignini Verdun. Learn, experiment and create a finished painting every Tuesday evening 6:00pm - 9:00pm at Express Yourself Studios, located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood.

Artist Rosalia Tignini Verdun an award winning artist will take participants through an exercise in Acrylics. Mrs. Verdun a local New Jersey artist is a member of the Portrait Society of America, the Millburn-Short Hills Art Center. Her work can be found in galleries and in private collections throughout the U.S. Currently Mrs. Verdun's work can be viewed at the ACL Gallery in Livingston, at Express Yourself Studios or by visiting www.rosaliart.com.

We'll create a mixed media painting inspired by Spring utilizing acrylic paints, decorative papers and pastel crayons.

Summer Art Camp Enrollment
Ongoing – August 20

Express Yourself Studios located at 1912 Springfield Avenue in Maplewood offers a Summer Art camp program for children ages 5-12. Children will experiment with a variety of media in a fun and supportive environment. Children will be encouraged to use their imagination freely as we learn about Master Artists. Summer Camp runs June 28 – August 27.

Campers will create 10-15 art projects per week. The projects will be inspired by a different Master Artist. Children will learn about the Artists through discussions, examples, and art-making. Projects will include painting, drawing, mixed media collage, sculpture, printmaking and paper mache. An exhibition and reception featuring student's artwork will be held at the conclusion of each week.
