Gloria Eck of Short Hills died on May 26. She was 87.  Born in East Orange, Eck graduated with honors from West Orange High School in 1940. She attended the Traphagen School of Design in New York City and later worked as an airline stewardess for Pan Am and American Airlines, and as an executive secretary and in the radiology department at Overlook Hospital in Summit. After suffering a broken leg, she was treated by Dr. Daniel B. Eck, an orthopaedic surgeon who later hired her as an office manager to set up a new practice and subsequently proposed to her. The couple married in 1950 and moved to Short Hills, where their first daughter was born. The family lived in Summit for a short time before settling in Short Hills, where Eck remained for 50 years. She enjoyed being a homemaker and mother, and also earned an associate's degree in business from Union County College. When her daughters were older, she started a 25-year career with Bloomingdale's as a salesperson and display artist. In her retirement, she wrote and illustrated a book about her experiences at Bloomingdale's. Eck and her husband were longtime parishioners of Christ Church in Short Hills and active members of Canoe Brook Country Club. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church today at 10am.
