John Joseph Weir, 86, Longtime MHS Science Teacher

John Joseph Weir of Sarasota, FL, retired from the Millburn High School faculty, died on Feb. 24 at home. He was 86. Born in Newark, Weir graduated from St. Michael's High School and later settled in Springfield before retiring to Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, in the South Pacific. He attended Seton Hall University and Colby College and earned graduate degrees in science and education. Weir taught at Carteret High School before joining the science department of Millburn High School, where he taught for 42 years. He served as president of the American Chemical Society and was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Springfield and the Old Guard of Millburn. Athletic throughout his life, Weir enjoy golf and bicycling, and ran his first marathon at age 59. A Mass was celebrated for Weir at St. James the Apostle Church in Springfield.
