Couple Rushing Baby To Hospital Strikes Millburn Teen

A Millburn teenager was in critical condition after she was struck by the car of a couple rushing their baby to the hospital, police said.

Millburn's first aid squad transported the teenager to University Hospital in Newark, where she is in critical but stable condition, Millburn Police Capt. Michael Palardy said.

The 18-year-old, who will be a senior at Millburn High School in the fall, was hit in front of the Haagen-Dazs on Millburn Ave. at 11:20 p.m. July 5.

Senior Class President Gave Speech Despite Prank

Every morning at 9:19 a.m., senior class president, Ray Holloway, would come on the loudspeaker, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and deliver the day's news.

"Good morning Millburn High School" was his tagline.

Principal Dr. William Miron pointed out at the 117th MHS Commencement Ceremony, Holloway truly was the "voice of Millburn High School" this year.

Millburn Man Charged in $15M Mortgage Scam

A Millburn man is among 11 people who have been charged in a $15-million mortgage fraud scam that involves 11 people in five states, the U.S. attorney's office announced Thursday. 

Larry L. Fullenwider, 61, of Millburn is among the group that has been charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud, U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman said.

The group allegedly drafted false documents and used "straw buyers" to defraud lenders. The lenders provided $15 million in mortgages based on the fraudulent documents and straw buyers, Fishman said.

Short Hills Resident Approved to be Federal Judge

The Senate confirmed a nomination of a Short Hills resident for the U.S. District Court in the District of New Jersey in a 91-3 vote this week, according to the U.S. Senate's website. 

After the overwhelming vote on July 16, Kevin McNulty, 57, could take the bench by the end of the summer, if he is sworn in soon, reported northjersey.com.

Residents Worry Dead Birds Result of West Nile

Recently, a few residents have been reporting dead birds around town in fear that it may be caused by the West Nile Virus. 

Millburn Animal Control met with the town's Department of Health yesterday to discuss the issue, if any.

"As of now there is nothing to be concerned about," Joe Bielski of the Animal Control said. "We are currently monitoring the situation though."

Millburn Resident Loses Battle With Cancer

Robert Chandler, of Millburn, a coach and teacher at Madison High School for three decades known for holding students to high standards and earning their respect, died Thursday after a battle with pancreatic cancer, according to Madison Athletic Director Sean Dowling.

Chandler won two state championships in his tenure as varsity soccer coach and, last month, students and alumni showed their appreciation and support for Chandler by holding a soccer tournament—the Chandler Cup—in his honor.

New Town Improvements Approved by Township Committee

The Millburn Township committee approved two ordinances to pay for capital improvements throughout the town.

Among the projects that are to be completed are resealing roads, adding handicapped access to buildings, upgrading computer servers and adding new equipment to the police and fire departments.

 "It's a laundry list of things that needed to be taken care of that were already approved in the budget," Mayor Sandra Haimoff said.

Meet Millburn's Animal Control Officer

Patch recently sat down with Joe Bielski, who took over in Millburn this year as an animal control officer after taking a course at Kean University.

Why did you want to work in Millburn?
"I originally started dispatching in Roselle Park and I found an opening here," Bielski explained. "My father used to live here and he told me about how great the area was and how nice the people were, so I saw the opening and applied for the job."

Millburn's Dispatch Might Be Taken Over By Livingston

Millburn officials are weighing the possible savings in outsourcing the town's police dispatch to Livingston. If approved, the township is estimating it will start in early 2013. 

"Unless Livingston gives us an outrageous figure it seems it may go through," Millburn's business administrator, Thomas Gordon, said.
