10 Unlocked Cars Burglarized Overnight in Millburn, Short Hills
Police warn residents to lock their cars after burglary spree on Presidents' Day weekend.
Ten unlocked cars were targeted in a string off burglaries Sunday night into Monday morning in Millburn and Short Hills, police said.
Officials reported the following items were stolen from the cars:
- Two pairs of prescription glasses, valued at $750, were stolen from an unlocked GMC car at a Ferndale Road home.
- A Fox Hill Lane resident said a $100 dog cage and $30 J.Crew t-shirt were stolen from an unlocked Mercedes Benz parked in the driveway.
- A $100 GPS was stolen from an unlocked Jeep at a Whitney Road residence.
- A Taylor Street resident reported a Dell computer monitor, valued at $15, and an HP printer, valued at $15, were stolen from a Ford car parked in the driveway.
In addition, six Short Hills residents reported burglaries on Monday. According to the report, nothing was missing from the cars. However, officials reported, the cars and glove boxes were ransacked.
Police said two of the burglaries occurred at residences on Farley Road, while other incidents happened at homes on Whitney Road, Alan Drive, Delbarton Drive and Essex Street.

Here we go again, rolling out the red carpet for criminals to enter the township. Obviously criminals will yank on numerous car doors until they find one unlocked, so while 10 cars burgled is a high number, the crooks were on far more properties than that, searching for those unlocked doors.
That's just what we need, crooks waltzing through town at night looking for crimes of opportunity.

Anyone who leaves their car doors unlocked with valuables inside deserve no sympathy after all of the multiple warnings from the Millburn Police in the last 2 years!

In addition to always locking the car it makes sense to keep valuables out of plain view in the car.

Despite all of the efforts by MPD and others to encourage people to lock their car doors, too many people are not heeding the warning. Perhaps it's time for a new approach. Why not pass an ordinance to allow those who do not lock their doors to be fined if the police are required to respond? This may act as a deterrent to those that are careless and the revenue could be used to offset police expense.

If you lock your doors, they will break into the car anyway and cause damage. Simple solution, do not leave anything in your car. Especially do not leave keys which is what i understand the criminals are seeking. We live in an affluent town which will attract outsiders. Crime will happen and I would prefer people breaking into cars than homes. Don't leave anything and you simply have the inconvenience of putting some papers back in your glove box.
Fining residents for not locking their car doors??? That's funny. I cracked up when I read that.

That's why car alarms were invented. And crooks are already breaking into area homes.
Always lock everything, and keep the property well lit at night. I see so many homes where not a single light is on at night, it boggles the mind.

I use to own a Crimson Red Metallic, Oldsmobile 98....it was in the days when you could keep your car doors, unlocked in the driveway...when I went to get into it the next day to go to work...the driver's door was ajar and the fuses that were in the glove compartment were on the passenger side floor....an attempted robbery.....also, the fancier a car you own...the worse it is....that car's hubcap was pried off....the emblem on the hood was removed....now I drive a much less noticeable vehicle...it's cheaper and nobody ever bothers it....and it's a terrific car......
