Acting with Emily Debuts in Maplewood

A Short Hills native offers reasonably priced acting classes for children.

If you've had a preschooler at any point in the past 10 years, the voice of Emily Bauer will sound familiar.

That's because she's been giving voice to another Emily for the past decade plus--Emily Elizabeth of the popular Clifford the Big Red dog cartoon series on PBS. (And, no, Bauer never did get to work directly with the late John Ritter who provided the voice of Clifford.  That's the wonder of voice-over work, said Bauer: "You're working all alone in a booth!")

Emily Bauer, a Short Hills native and a current Millburn resident, is bringing her considerable knowledge of acting and showbiz to her new "Acting with Emily" location on Baker Street in Maplewood Village.

At the grand opening on Sunday, November 22 (free goodies and raffles from 3-7 p.m.), Bauer described how she started acting professionally at the age of 8. She's performed on Broadway, in European tours, on soap operas and, of course, done voice-over work. Besides Emily Elizabeth, she's currently the vocal star of English-language Pokemon.

Emily is not new to Maplewood Village. She was previously in an upstairs space on Maplewood Avenue but "no-one knew I was there!" On Baker Street, the new storefront location will remedy that.

Bauer also hopes to remedy the children's acting class scene in the area. Bauer remembers the "obscene amounts of money" her parents spent on her growing up to help her realize her dream. Now, as a working actor, she looked around the area and saw "high price classes and lots of fluff." Bauer's studio, she contends, will provide substantive courses and classes at very reasonable fees.

Courses and lessons include "TV tykes," "creative drama," "acting for the camera," "acting for commercials," "private voice lessons," "private coaching/audition prep" and more. Course are in 5-week sessions ranging from $150 to $315. Private lessons are charged in 30, 45 and 60-minute increments.

Also sharing the bright new space on Baker Street is Jody Gianni who will be doing headshots for kids and other photography.

Besides her acting experience and training, Bauer says she can also offer students her industry contacts. "I can bring agents and managers from NYC" here to this location, she said, pointing to the train overpass just down the street.
