Another Day Off - What Will You Do?

Millburn Cinema will offer matinees tomorrow; the library and the mall are also open. What are your ideas? Do share!

Looking for things to do with the kids on their third day off from school this week?

Well, we thought we'd get this conversation started with a couple of ideas and let you take it from here.

Clearview Millburn Cinema's General Manager Samir Shalaby knows an opportunity when he sees one, but also wanted to help out so he has been running matinees of children's movies this week, and says he will do the same on Wednesday.

"Some of the moms have called me and said, "I love you," Shalaby said, with a laugh. "I am happy to do it. I know the feeling of not having any power. I was out of power for three days."

Millburn Cinema will be showing Puss 'n Boots, rated PG; The Might Macs, rated G; In Time, rated PG-13; and for weary parents who might want to vegge out in a separate theater, the Ides of March (with George Clooney), rated R. For show times, visit its website or call 973-376-0809.

Here are some other ideasl:

  • The library will be open, not only as a place to read and find books, but it has wi-fi and outlets for charging phones and computers.
  • The Mall at Short Hills is also open for shopping, or walking, or eating or sitting and letting the kids do some shopping or window shopping. In fact, if the October snowstorm didn't put you in a winter holiday spirit, maybe the "artic wonderland and enchanted Ice Palace" at the mall will. Billed as a mult-sensory experience, the exhibit features falling snow, footage of artic landscapes and and animals and an ice princess.
    • Go the city! The trains might not run on time as there have been delays, but if your kids are patient with that sort of thing, why not take in a museum or Broadway mantinee?
    • Try some New Jersey Museums (call ahead to make sure they are open and have power):

    Liberty Science Center

    222 Jersey City Boulevard
    Jersey City, NJ 07305
    (Open Tue-Fri 9am-4pm; Weekends 9am-5pm

Some of the exhibits currently at the Libery Science Museum include:

Touch Tunnel: Navigate a pitch-black maze using only your sense of touch

Skyscraper!  A cityscape of towers; discover what it takes to design and build the world's tallest skyscrapers.

Eat and Be Eaten Visit live animals and discover their tricks for catching food without becoming dinner themselves. 3rd Floor.

IMAX movies: Tornado Alley and The Ultimate Wave - Tahiti 3D.

    Fall/Winter Hours 2011-2012  (Through April 1):

    Tue – Fri 9:00 am – 4:00 p.m.; Sat – Sun 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

    The Newark Museum:

    Dynamic Earth: Revealing Nature's Secrets
The Newark Museum is home to a state-of-the-art Planetarium and an 83,000 specimen Natural Science Collection, which is the basis of the Dynamic Earth: Revealing Nature's Secrets Gallery.

    Alice and Leonard Dreyfuss Planetarium
The Alice and Leonard Dreyfuss Planetarium features a state-of-the-art Zeiss ZKP3 star projector, providing an out-of-this-world experience through which adults and kids can learn about astronomy and space travel.

The AMC theater in Essex Green serves food during the movie. Lunch and a movie is fun.

Laura: To your knowledge, have you heard if Turtle Back Zoo has opened? How about Florham Park Roller Rink? I just tried both with no success and they do not appear open but I thought perhaps with your magic press connections, you could find out!!! :-) No worries if not but maybe someone else knows this as well.....

As of yesterday, that area was still without power. Don't know yet today. But if anyone else finds out before I get to it, post it here. -- There's a lot of news to check out, so for things like this, I could use the help. ;-)

What, Laura, are you busy or something?? Haha--:-)

I can see why you need the help and I appreciate the work you are doing--you are a one man band, but your tune is playing for the whole town. Thank you.

What about a hike in South Mountain Reservation followed by a lunch at the Millburn Diner? Tire them out, fill them up!
