Additional Snow Days Would Be Made Up in April Break
District looking at MLK day or Jan. 2 for possibly sending Hartshorn, Glenwood students to school.
At the first meeting of the Board of Education since the October snowstorn, district administrators on Monday reviewed options for getting back the two days Hartshorn and Glenwood students missed as well as what to do if there are any more "snow days" missed this year.
The snowstorm knocked out power to three schools and thousands of families, forcing the school district to use all its “snow days” up before winter has even begun. District officials are hoping for a mild winter because if there are any more "snow days" this year, they will be taken out of the April break, said Superintendent Dr. James Crisfield.
As for the two extra days Hartshorn and Glenwood students missed, the district is still trying to determine exactly when to make those up. Crisfield said the administration is looking at “recapturing Martin Luther King Day and possibly January 2." Another possibility would be to use one of those days and one Saturday.
"We are reviewing our options,” Crisfield said.
A High School student suggested that if there are more snow days, students might prefer to go to school for a longer time at the end of school instead of taking away spring break, but Crisfield said that would put school into the last week of June, which makes it tough on parents and students with summer activities.
“There’s really no palatable way to do it,” Crisfield said.
Regina Truitt said she had heard there may be a way to get the governor to excuse those days because it was a disaster, but Crisfield said that in order for that to happen, all the vacation days have to be used up as snow (or disaster) days first.
Crisfield also thanked the schools buildings and maintenance crews as well as the police and fire departments for helping the schools get back up an running as quickly as they did.

In these types of situations it is always about just complying with state law. They wind up showing a movie or some other similar thing. But there is no other option. You need to get the 180 days in.

The state can also audit your attendance to make sure enough students attend for the day to "count". Forget exactly what % needs to show up, think its something like the schools "daily average" so it is a high enough number that a substantial number of students would need to attend. I remember many years ago one of the HS 's Senior classes had to go to school during April break because there were too many snowdays and graduation date could not be changed. The snow days were added onto the end of the year for the other grades.

..at least I have fair warning to make changes in our Spring vacation plans (not too sure about our "non-refundable" tickets).
Mark, say it ain't so. They show movies instead of teaching on these "make up" days? Our teachers wouldn't do that. It's about the children.

If they plan to use a Saturday as a make-up day for Glenwood/Hartshorn, it would be great if they can make up their minds and have this during the Winter. Saturdays in spring tend to get taken up with sports. They just aren't going to make everyone happy here, so the BOE just needs to make a decision they think will result in the most attendance at those schools.

My vote: Friday nights--preferably several weeks in a row.
Nothing like some free babysitting!
