BOE Members Ethics Questioned

Two members of the public say Scott Kamber shouldn't have voted on the Wyoming aides.

The ethics of one Board of Education member were called into question this week in relation to his vote on teacher aides at Wyoming Elementary School.

Jeff Diecidue and Josh Scharf, regulars at school board meetings, questioned during Monday's Board of Education meeting board Vice President Scott Kamber's decision to vote during the Oct. 19 meeting on the aides.

During that meeting, the board voted to add two part-time aides to assist at Wyoming Elementary School in the two fifth grade classes. Kamber said during the meeting one of his children is in the Wyoming fifth grade, and Diecidue questioned his decision to vote on the matter.

Scharf Monday night said the board seemed uncomfortable with Kamber's decision to vote on the aide time. Additionally, he cited how Debra Fox abstained from the vote because she knew one of the aides.

Kamber said every board member has sat and voted on issues that affect their children, and no one has raised a fuss about it.

"Most people want board members who are parents," he said. "(Our decisions) impacts each of us."

Diecidue said some of the things brought before the board by the public, including the recent superintendent search concerns, is because there is a lack of faith. He said he's reviewed the rules by the School Ethics Commission and its advisory opinions.

Three board members asked about voting on grading matters, he said, and they were told they could vote for the future of the system but not any retroactive matters because it would affect their children. "You're on shakey ethical ground," he said.

Kamber said there are a lot of differing views on the advisory rulings from the commission. "You make a good argument, but it's not supported," he said. "You're selectively reading it."

Diecidue said he doesn't think it's a gray area and that it's more black and white than Kamber thinks. He also cited how Fox abstained from the vote, which Kamber said she did not need to do.
