Boiler Overheats, Causing Smoke

Firefighters called to a downtown Millburn Avenue building.

A boiler in a downtown building overheated and smoked when the superintendent turned it on for the season on Friday.

Millburn firefighters were at 295 Millburn Ave. at just after 7 p.m., 35 minutes after the superintendent turned on the boiler, according to a fire department report.

The superintendent noticed smoke coming from the boiler room when he called the fire department, according to the report, but firefighters found no fire. The boiler had overheated when it malfunctioned, and the gas-oil unit reached a temperature of 450 degrees.

Firefighters shut off the gas and oil to the boiler and told the superintendent to get it repaired before turning it back on, according to the report. The unit had been recently serviced.
