Can't Afford Prada? Valentino? Jimmy Choo? Think Again
As downtown boutiques clear the racks for fall, it's time to reap the savings.
Walking around Downtown Millburn, it can't be avoided: Giant "SALE" signs are blaring from multiple windows.
It must be August.
Over at Gito on the corner of Main and Millburn, owner Renee Mayronne was busy Friday afternoon arranging the new fall fashions on racks. She had just re-dressed her front window mannequins in black Phillip Lim frocks, one of which was a floor-length gown with a slit back that brought to mind Katharine Hepburn.
Despite the compelling fall fashion, it was hard not to be drawn to the sale racks (also beautifully arranged) where the black beaded and belted Marchesa dress featured in the side window was on sale at 50% off.
A beautiful Giambattista Valli dress in tan (or was it ecru?) and black and reminiscent of Jackie Onassis had been reduced to $2,500 from $4,995. This reporter's dreams were dashed, but others might find the means.
"Everyone is going for him," called Mayronne. "Everyone, who goes for Valentino, is going for Giambattista Valli." Mayronne's enthusiasm for her work is contagious. The clientele seemed to be enjoying themselves greatly. Said one shopper of Mayronne, "She is fun—and really helpful!"
Mayronne shared two major retail philosophies with Patch. First: "I'll dress people head to toe—the shoes, the handbag, the accessories—without breaking the bank." Second: Besides carrying easily recognizable names like Prada and Stella McCartney, she is promoting and "carrying designers you can't find in the mall or department stores." Mayronne is championing up-and-comers like Elizabeth and James, Yoana Baraschi and Hoss.
But back to those sale racks? What if 50 percent off isn't enough? "Shhhhhhhhh," says Mayronne. She's taking some items to 70 percent off this weekend.
Where else to find bargains?
Across the street, Deborah Gilbert Smith is offering high-end clothing at rates of 50, 60, 70 and even 80 percent off.
Around the corner on Essex Street, Jalm has a sign in its window proclaiming savings of 50-75 percent.
And, of course, Annie Sez, the well-known national chain further east on Millburn Avenue, is distributing coupons for 20 percent off purchases. The coupons are valid through September 5.
