Committee Reviewing School Redistricting Plans

The Board of Education's Property Committee is reviewing the plans before they're brought to the full board.

The discussions about redistricting for the Millburn School District have started with the Board of Education's Property Committee, but no proposal has come forward yet.

The Board of Education asked Schools Supt. Richard Brodow to prepare plans for redistricting in November. Brodow said two weeks ago he intended to present the plans at a Board of Education meeting in February.

The Property Committee received several plans from Brodow during its meeting on Monday, committee Chairman Michael Birnberg reported during Monday's Board of Education meeting. Several scenarios were presented, he said, and now the committee is reviewing them and asking questions.

The review is in its preliminary phase for the committee, he said, and it will lead to a committee recomendation on what is the best course of action.

School officials have been discussing the potential of redistricting because of an overcrowding situation and Glenwood Elementary School.

Jill Tarnow, a Glenwood parent, said during Monday's school board meeting the preliminary enrollment figures for 2010-11 show the largest population for the school yet. It doesn't help the fifth grade class leaving at the end of the school year is small.

"Just because we're not openly complaining doesn't mean we're satisfied," she said.

There are both educational and safety concerns, she said. For example, the school has a new video conferencing system like the other four elementary schools. The only spot for it, though, is in the library, which is used most of the school day. It means the video conferencing system can only be used at limited times, Tarnow said, unlike the other schools.

Also, there are physical education classes with mixes grades, including fourth graders and second graders together. The lunchroom also is close to capacity, and it would be to capacity next school year if something isn't done.

As a Glenwood parent located in a bus zone, I can only hope that others who are being bussed will show up at the open forum tomorrow, Jan. 31, 3-5 pm at the Millburn Library. Also, it is critical to attend the Feb 8th BOE meeting, 7:45 pm at Glenwood. I believe Glenwood is a special place, and has a warm family-oriented culture unlike most other schools. Like many others, we purchased our home so our children could attend Glenwood. I would be very upset to see my 6 yr old moved to another school at such a formative age, or for my 3.5 yr old to have to attend a different school from her sister.
All those who are bussed to school - please attend as we are at risk!
