Community Comes Together to Cleanup St. Stephen's
Interfaith community groups provide help to victims of Hurricane Irene.
St. Stephen's Episcopal Church was heavily damaged by flood waters that raged down Main Street and in need of repairs and re-painting.
So on Sunday young and old of different faiths came together to help restore cleanup the XX year old church -- led by interfaith community outreach from B’nai Jushurun, B’nai Israel, Christ Church, St. Rose of Lima, Wyoming Presbyterian Church and St. Stephen's Episcopalian Church.
Activites included painting and otherwise cleaning St. Stephen's church and grounds, assembling toiletry kits for homeless families in Paterson who were also victims of Hurricane Irene, assisting local families with yardwork and writing letters to support troops stationed overseas.
Jill Altmark, who helped to coordinate the event said, "We hope to repair the world by starting with this annual event in Millburn."
The next even will be the interfaith Thansgiving service at B’Nai Jeshurun on Nov. 22. "We hope this interfaith community outreach becomes an annual event along with the thanksgiving service," Altmark said.

As a member of St. Stephen's Church, I wanted to express my appreciation to all the young people of varied religious affiliations that turned out last Sunday afternoon to help St. Stephen's Church, and its neighbors, undo the damage from Hurricane Irene. Thanks not only for the "hands on" help, but for the wonderful example of how youthful energy and enthusiasm can be channeled to such good purposes. It was a pleasure to spend time with all of you.
