Deerfield Kindergartners Learn about Fire Safety
It's part of the firefighters' annual visits to each elementary school.
There was no fire engine for them to climb aboard, but Deerfield Elementary School kindergartners learned about fire safety and saw how firefighters dressed on Friday afternoon.
Millburn firefighters Sam Caivano and Jeff Wanamaker showed students a video about fire safety and talked to them about topics like what to do when they hear a smoke detector go off, when is the right time to call 911 and how to "stop, drop and roll" if they are on fire.
They were also told to never play with matches. "If you see anyone playing with them, I want you to be a tattletale," Wanamaker said.
Students were also told to never hide during a fire and go outside and to not be afraid of firefighters. To show that firefighters are not scary, Caivano dressed in his gear and gave students a close-up look.
