Save a Dog Today in Millburn

What are you doing this weekend? You could rescue a dog.

To keep dogs out of high-kill shelters in Gerogia and South Carolina, Home for Good Dog Rescue is hosting an adoption event today, July 28, from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at PetSmart, 187 Millburn Ave. in town.

The organization gets the homeless dogs from high-kill shelters and tries to find homes for dogs from foster families throughout the area. Most of these dogs have been abandoned before, so it is their mission to make sure they place the dogs in good situations.

But it’s not just about find a home for every dog, said Home for Good Dog Rescue treasurer Richard Errico, “We try to find the right homes and the right families for the right dogs.”

“We try not to set goals,” said Errico. “It’s not a numbers game for us. Hopefully we can adopt out some dogs, so we can save more. The more we can adopt out the more we can save."

If it has volunteers available, according to Errico, they begin processing applications as soon as they get them.

The organization has a working office in Berkeley Heights, where they can arrange meet and greets and adoptions with specific dogs and families during the week.

Since many people, veterinarians and personal references, can be hard to get in touch with on the weekends, it encourage families to fill out an application before the event. You can also get pre-approved by filling out an application online.

To fill out an application or for more information on volunteering or becoming a foster, go to homeforgooddogs.org. To view their adoptable pets, you can go to Petfinder.

Home for Good Dog Rescue is a volunteer-based 501 (c)(3) non-profit animal rescue.

It looks like you can become a foster owner of a dog but only the application for adoption is online. I think you have to go to one of the events to find one.

But also call over to Valley Veterinary on Millburn Avenue for dogs from the area that need a good home.
Here's the link to some photos of them. http://millburn.patch.com/articles/adopt-me-770902fa
