Holiday Concerts, Christmas Pageants and More Planned
A look at events happening around Millburn-Short Hills to celebrate Christmas and the holidays.
Christmas is a little more than a week away, and there's still plenty of music to be heard and other holiday-related activities to get you ready.
Millburn Middle School holds its winter chorus concert on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The program will feature holiday favorites, folk songs, Broadway tunes and music from around the world.
Millburn High School plays host to its winter concert on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Among the groups performing are Cantica Nova, the Millburn Chorale, the Chamber String Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra and the Miller Chorus. The chorus and orchestra will combine forces to present the Hallelujah Chorus from Beethoven's "Christ On The Mount of Olives."
The elementary schools also are holding their holiday concerts. Glenwood Elementary School has its concert Thursday, South Mountain Elementary School on Friday and Wyoming Elementary School on Tuesday. Parents at each school are told a time to attend a performance. Deerfield Elementary School and Hartshorn Elementary School already have held their concerts.
The Mall at Short Hills is playing host to a holiday concert series. On Friday, Alex Collins will play piano from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday , the Cobblestone Carolers will be strolling the mall from 1-4 p.m. The Newark Boys Choir will perform Saturday from 2-2:30 p.m. and 3:15-3:45 p.m. On Sunday, the Kriegler Woodwind Quintet and Frank Bowker Bell Show will perform from 1-1:30 p.m., 2-2:30 p.m. and 3-3:30 p.m. On Dec. 21, Bob DeBenedette will play the piano from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Bob DeBenedette will perform on piano and Woodhaven Strings will play on Dec. 23 from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. On Christmas Eve, Claremont String Quartet and Vivian Penham String Quartet will perform from 1-4 p.m. The Cobblestone Carolers will be back on Christmas Eve along with the Wooden Soldiers to stroll the mall. All concerts, except otherwise noted, are on the lower level near Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus.
Community Congregational Church will hold its annual Christmas pageant on Sunday from 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. The church's youth choir and Sunday school students will present the Christmas story, and a birthday party for Jesus will follow the pageant.
Wyoming Presbyterian Church will have special holiday music during its 10 a.m. worship service on Sunday.
St. Rose of Lima Church will hold a Blessing of the Christmas Creche during its Masses on Sunday. The Sunday Mass schedule is 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Families are invited to bring a figure from their home manger scene to be blessed.
The lights are shining at Turtle Back Zoo as part of the Essex County Holiday Light Spectacular. The event, which has previously been on weekends, will be held daily Friday though Jan. 2 from 5 p.m.-9 p.m. each day. The event is free, but visitors should bring a non-perishable food item to donate.
