Local History: Little House on Millburn Avenue

A look back at the restaurant that was near the Springfield border.

The much-loved Little House restaurant, formerly at 537 Millburn Ave., at the corner of Millburn Avenue and Baltusrol Way, invariably evokes wistful memories of the food served there by the owners, the Volkers.

The wrapped toothpick seen here was among a box of Little House toothpicks donated to the Millburn-Short Hills Historical Society recently. The "Alderney" on the wrapper refers to the Alderney Dairy that apparently kept Little House supplied with its popular ice cream and milkshakes.

According to a Shorpy post, Alderney Dairy was "founded in 1894 as Newark Milk and Cream Co., later becoming the Alderney Dairy Co. By 1936, it included 10 creameries, 800 dairy farms, six branch-distributing plants and its pasteurization and bottling plant in Newark—making the company one of the largest independent dairies in the United States. It took its name from the Alderney cow, which later was replaced by Jerseys and Guernseys. All these names came from several small islands in the English Channel."

The Little House photo is from the collection of John and Barbara Murray. New Eyes for the Needy would have been to the left of Little House in this photo and the Burgdorff Realtors' parking lot is at the site now.
