Mayor Sandra "Sandy" Haimoff will seek re-election to the township committee in November.

The republican mayor has been endorsed by the local republican party and has been on the Township Committee nine years. She was on the Board of Education for 12 years prior to that. She has also served on the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Hartshorn Arboretum board, the Environmental commission and was president of the Hartshorn PTA.

The last year was a particularly difficult one to be serving the Township Committee, what with Tropical Storm Irene flooding downtown and nearby Washington and South Mountain neighborhoods, and leaving the town without water or electricity for a week or more. Then there was the October snowstorm, which, in some ways, caused more damage than Irene. Trees and power lines were down throughout the town, with many roads impassable in Short Hills for weeks. The Halloween parade was cancelled and trick-or-treating was treacherous.

"We have had some difficult days in the last year," she said. "But a lot of positive has come out of it. We're working with other towns in other counties on issues and I don't think that's been done before."

Since August, the mayor has spent much of her time dealing with JCP&L and on a multi-town council of mayors who are working together to find ways to remediate flood damage and minimize future flooding.

Despite the extra work and the some of the anger and frustration among residents that she dealt with after those storms, she is willing to run again.

“Most of it is enjoyable,” she said. "I like working for the community."

According to the clerk's office, no one else -- Republican or Democrat -- has filed to run for Haimoff's seat.
