Meet Prospective Board of Education Members: This Week Ahead
Here's what's going on in Millburn-Short Hills this week.
On Monday, Millburn's Board of Education Meeting is scheduled for 7:45 p.m in the Education Center.
In the last special meeting the board approved a preliminary budget that would raise school taxes 2 percent for the township.
At Monday night's meeting, residents vying for the open Board of Education seat will have the opportunity to explain why they are interested in serving on the board and their qualifications.
The board will appoint a resident to fill the open seat at the April 11 meeting, school board president Jeffery Waters explained at the Feb. 25 meeting.
The seat has been empty since Jean Pasternak resigned to focus on family matters at the Feb. 11 board meeting.
Who do you think should fill the open seat on board?
On Wednesday, the Recreation Commission is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. Bauer Community Center, 100 Main Street, in Taylor Park.
On Thursday, the Millburn Old Guard is set to meet at 10:30 a.m. at George Bauer Community Center, 100 Main Street.

We need to make sure that none of them are doing it just to improve their family position and as a prelude to suing the district as the departed member did.

Hi Zoinks
Thank you so much for your bravery in sharing this information about board members joining the board to "just improve their family position." You really know so much about our board members. This is just not a nice thing for board members to do since the community relies on them to serve without "just improve their family position."
Maybe the only way to make sure that our new board member is not there to "just
improve their family position" is to pick a new board member who doesn't have kids in the schools? That way it will be impossible for them to "just improve their family position" as board members.
What do you think?

Who filed a lawsuit? What was the allegation?
Frankly, I want a BOE member to have children in the public schools to ensure that the board member has an interest in our schools.

Hi J S Beckerman
Since I've moved to town, the neighbors who have been most helpful to me in navigating the school system have been the ones who have older kids who are already in the HS or college. They already experienced the entire school system -- from kindergarten to HS graduation and college admission, so their advice has been priceless.
I think a few board members who have children already through the schools would provide that same type of advise to others in the community. Also, since they don't have kids in the schools, they won't be on the board to "just improve their family position" as board members.
It will give our school community a much richer experience.

Zoinks, since you are in the know, attend BoE meetings regularly and have access to the highest levels of the administration, then please enlightenen us all. What was the issue that caused a legal settlement stated on yesterday's BoE meetin agenda? How much is this costing the taxpayers?
f. Resolve to approve the legal settlement for student # 20165078 regarding educational placement for the 2012-2013, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 school years.
