Update: MHS Teacher's Child Struck, Killed by Car
MIllburn students, staff offer a moment of silence for teacher whose child died in the accident.
Update: Nov. 17, from Ridgewood Patch: Ridgewood Police on Thursday released more information on the death of the daughter of a Millburn High School teacher, saying the 6-year-old was struck in a neighobor's driveway by a 24-year-old who was trying to avoid a parked car.
In a press release, police said 24-year-old Mirjam Kaiser, also of Ridgewood, drove up the driveway of the house next door, crossed the grass to avoid a parked car and struck 6-year-old Kelly Creegan, who was playing in front of the parked vehicle.
No charges have been filed in the Monday evening accident at this time and the investigation remains open, police said.
Millburn High School students and staff paused for a moment of silence Tuesday morning out of respect for history teacher Elise Creegan and her family, who live in Ridgewood.
“It’s a tragic loss for this community,” Ridgewood Police Chief John Ward said from the scene Monday night. ”Our hearts go out to all those impacted by this terrible loss.”
Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli said that the incident is a "very bad accident that has not been classified as anything other than that at this time."
Somerville Elementary School officials identified the victim as first-grader Kelly Creegan and said in a message to parents that school counselors, the child study team and other school personnel at Somerville are available for support to students.
At Millburn High School, school counselors, case managers, nurse and other staff are available for support at the school.
"We will conduct classes and activities as scheduled but no student - or teacher- should hesitate asking to be excused," said Dr. William Miron in an email to parents. "Our thoughts are with the Creegans."
