Millburn Fencers Move on to State Tournaments

Three Squads will compete in state squad championships; Boys qualify for state team tourney; two Epees head to individual championships.

The Millburn High School boys fencing team is headed to the state team tournament, after placing third in district competition behind Columbia and Governor Livingston last Sunday.

Fencing's District 3 tournament took place Jan. 29 at Wayne Valley High School with 11 teams competing to earn a spot into the states team, squad, as well as individual tournaments.

The boys team placed third overall, behind Columbia (first) and Governor Livingston (second). The team will now compete in the State Team Tournament begining the week of February 6th.

Walter Zhang, Ricky Eschenbach, Albert Reiss, Keegan Caulfield, and Josh Novick, won the tournaments epee squad title and took home the championship trophy. They will head to squad championships at the end of February.

Junior Ricky Eschenbach, turning in an undefeated performance in the individual epee competition, took first place and will head to the state individuals competition. Also headed to individual state competition is Junior Albert Reiss who placed fourth in the epee individuals.

The boys saber squad, Ray Holloway, Alec Tabatchnick and Dan Dembner, took fourth place in the saber competition, earning them a berth in the state squad championships.

Millburn girls foil squad, comprised of Tiffany Chan, Helen He, and Julia Burzynski, finished in fourth place, advancing them on to the state squad championships.
