Millburn Millers Take Home Two Medals in First Indoor Track Meet
Winter Track kicked off at the end of December. Matthew Deshaw recaps the Super Essex Conference Championship Meet.
As the snow fell on Northern New Jersey, the Millburn Millers competed in their first indoor meet of the 2012-2013 winter track season, the Super Essex Conference Championship Meet in December. Twenty high schools went head to head, with the top six finishers in each event receiving medals. Millburn took home a total of two medals, both in the Boys Varsity 3200-meter race.
The Millers, members of the American Divison of the SEC, started the meet with Antonia Salazar and Gus Muller (both juniors) representing the Boys Varsity squad in the 400m race. Salazar, finishing 17th in a field of 29 finishers, crossed the line with a time of 57.24 seconds. Muller, finishing in 25th place, crossed the line in 59.76 seconds. In the Girls Varsity 400m race, Maeve Flanagan finished in 12th place with a time of 1:06.15 in a field of 28 finishers. Also running for Millburn was junior Gwyn Haertel (1:14.81) coming in 24th and senior Dana Ettinger (1:22.76) crossing the line as the 28th finisher.
The Millers had three runners competing in a field of 27 finishers in the Boys Varsity 1600m race. The top finisher for Millburn was freshman Will Meyer (4:58.65) who came in 10th. Freshman Chris Stone finished a close 12th place with a time of 5:00.42. Third in the trio was Dan Altschuler, with a time of 5:12.25, in the 18th spot. Winning the race was Columbia High School senior Victor Jimenez, with a time of 4:36.14.
The next event, the Boys Varsity 55-meter dash, featured a field of 31 finishers, with senior Donghyun Kim of Millburn crossing the line in 7.21 seconds, in 13th place. In first place was Seaton Hall’s Clay Austin, with a time of 6.64 seconds.
The American Division Boys Varsity 800-meter race boasted a 10th place finish by junior Henry Thomas in 2:09.09 in a field of 33 finishers. For the girls, Maeve Flannagan finished 10th out of 21 runners with a time of 2:38.46.
The Millers rounded out the SEC meet with the 3200-meter race. The Boys Varsity team boasted two medals, a silver won by Millburn junior Matthew DeShaw, finishing 2nd in a field of 16 runners with a time of 10:15.74, two seconds behind the 1st place finisher from Livingston. Junior Steven Cohen won a 4th place medal with a finishing time of 10:20.56. Finshing 13th in the American Division was freshman John Lacy, running his first 3200m race in 11:31.07.
