Four varsity high school tennis teams met at Millburn’s home courts Saturday morning for the second annual Millburn Challenge tournament, and when the dust settled at 5 p.m., the Millers had won the championship trophy for the second year, without giving up a set.

In the morning round, MHS faced off against Bernards High School, while Seton Hall Prep met Chatham High. The winners would face eachother in the afternoon round while the losers played a consolation round.

In the early round, against Bernards, Millburn’s first singles Tyler Schick outplayed Luke Roser 6-2, 6-4. Rob Xie, at second singles, overpowered Dan Wu 6-0, 6-2. Playing third singles, Teddy Moskovitz took out Teddy Apt, 6-2, 6-2.

On the doubles top court, Mac Johnson and Jared Wishnow beat Jordan Isaacs and Kevin Wallace 6-1, 6-1. At second doubles, Nicky Chen-Schmidt and Jon Duan defeated Eric Oringer and Johannes Oster, 6-1, 6-3.

Seton Hall Prep edged out Chatham 3 courts to 2 in the morning, setting up a contest with Millburn in the final round.

In the later round, Schick shut out the Pirates’ top court player Cesar Munoz 6-0, 6-0. Xie notched a 6-0, 6-1 win over Antonio Guarco at second singles. Brian Alter, holding down the third singles spot, trounced Pete Lazzali 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles, Chen-Schmidt and Duan, on court one, beat Ken Lamar and Arthur Gigon 6-1, 6-2.  Johnson and Moskovitz finished the match at second doubles by besting James Cirignano and Mike DeFilippo 6-2, 6-1.

The consolation round was won by Bernards, edging out Chatham 3-2.

A day earlier, Millburn beat Montclair High School 5-0. The Millers’ overall record now stands at 7-1. They play Westfield High School on Monday, and begin their quest for the Essex County crown on Tuesday at Brookdale Park in Bloomfield.
