Montclair Gets Revenge on Millburn Girls Soccer
Millers lose 4-0 to visiting Montclair Mounties.
Just four days ago the Millburn girls soccer team defeated the Montclair girls for the county championship, halting Montclair’s championship streak at four in a row. Wednesday, the squads met for a third time, and, as they say, revenge is a dish best served cold.
Montclair came to Dr. Keith A. Neigel Field on a chilly Wednesday afternoon and handed Millburn a 4-0 shutout, dropping the locals to 13-5 as they prepare for the upcoming state sectional playoffs.
“I was disappointed by the goals that we conceded. They were bad goals,” said Millburn head coach Andy Sones.
Millburn was without four starters due to injuries, and Montclair did its best to take advantage, controlling the contest throughout. The Mounties out-shot the Millers 11-2, and Millburn did not pick up its first shot on goal until there was under nine minutes to play in the opening half. The four goals allowed by the home team represent the most scored by any Millburn opponent this season.
“Montclair is a very good team, they have some very good defenders,” Sones said. “It never surprises me when they do well.”
With 30:22 to play in the opening half, Montclair’s Haley Snyder converted a corner kick from Liz Hartnett to put Montclair on the board. Snyder found the ball bouncing in front of the net and whacked it in for the score.
Montclair did not strike again until the opening minutes of the second half when Meagan Morris tapped a deflected ball in for a score. Morris helped put the visitors up 3-0, finding Maya Pitts in the center of the goalie box for a one-timer. Morris scored her second and Montclair’s final goal with 23:25 left to play.
For Millburn, the loss means little, though a win would have somewhat damaged Montclair’s chance at winning a conference championship. But with the state playoffs around the corner Sones said the team is focused on getting ready to make a run at a title, not getting meaningless wins.
The seeding has not been posted yet, though there was a coach’s meeting Wednesday night to determine which teams would be seeded where. Sones said that he expects either a fourth or a fifth seed, which would give Millburn at least two home playoff games.
The Millers’ last scheduled game is on Saturday at home against Chatham.
