Transit police continue to seek to identify the man witnesses say jumped in front of a train two weeks ago.

NJ Transit police are pursuing several leads received after an appeal to the public for help in identifying the man who witnesses said jumped in front of a train at the Millburn Station two weeks ago.

Transit Spokesman John Durso on Tuesday continued to encourage anyone who might have any information that could help identify the man to call NJ Transit.

The fatality occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at approximately 6 p.m. at the Millburn Station.

Eyewitnesses said that the man appeared to be praying before they saw him jump in front of the train, which was passing through Millburn without stopping as it headed eastbound, with no passengers inside. One eye witnesses also said prior to that, the man appeared to be talking on his cell phone, which authorities said was destroyed.

NJ Transit police describe the man as white and clean-shaven with short dark hair and gray eyes, who appeared to be about 50 years old. He was 5-feet, 9-inches tall and weighed 240 pounds.

The man was wearing a blue denim button-down shirt, tan pants, a black leather coat and white/black New Balance sneakers, size 11.

Anyone with information is asked to call NJ TRANSIT Police at 1-888-TIPS-NJT or 973-378-6565. Please refer to Case #11-10640.

They should check with the wireless carriers to see who was making a call from nearby cell towers in the minutes before the accident. That should narrow it down to a few dozen people.

Yyvonne, I know it's coming from a good place, but police work is a little harder than that. It's not all CSI in the real world. Bodies go unidentified all the time, and it's not because the police are incompetent.

Actually, in this instance, going unidentified for this long is unusual. The factors in play when someone goes unidentified are when the body is badly decomposed, an inability to determine the method of death, a lack of eye witnesses immediately prior to death, especially in clearly visable or well-lit conditions. While we don't know why this person killed himself, knowing that he did eliminates other possible leads in figuring out who he was and how he ended up at his destination. Maybe he choose to do this when people who knew him would be out of the country traveling but, given the neighborhood, the fact that he seemed familiar with the train schedule, and the investigation immediately following his death, including eye witness accounts, this is not a typical situation. Especially with all the resources we have now to reach out to the community to share information on so many levels.

While it is certainly a tragedy that this man felt compelled to end his life, there is another tragedy here, that of the train crew who witnessed the incident, most likely feel in some way responsible, yet were utterly powerless to prevent it (it takes a very long distance to bring a train moving at the speed limit to a stop).

I grieve for the victim and his family, but also for the train crew and their families, who were just trying to do their jobs when this hit them out of the blue.
