Ten Years Later: Sept. 11

On Sept. 11, a Day to Reflect and Honor

A listing of local memorial ceremonies and events in Livingston and nearby towns.

 

The tragedies of Sept. 11, 2001 will be remembered and its victims and heroes honored at ceremonies and special events around Essex County this Sunday. Municipalities, organizations and houses of worship are gathering together and have invited the public to attend various types of memorials. 

Listed below are events occurring on Sept. 11 in Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, South Orange, and West Orange. Please feel free to share anything we have not included in the Comments Section.

MILLBURN:

Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Short Hills will hold a service to commemorate the 10th anniversary at Erev Shabbat services tonight, Sept. 9, at 5:30 p.m. Rabbi Matthew D. Gewirtz, who wrote the book Gift of Grief will deliver the sermon.

7:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. St. Rose of Lima Masses of Remembrance: Saint Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, 52 Short Hills Ave., Short Hills. The church will dedicate Masses of Remembrance to those who died on 9/11/2001 and honor the first responders, fire fighters, police, and others who risked themselves in service to others during and after the terrorist attacks.

4:00 p.m.  Millburn Rembers -- Sept. 11th Memorial Ceremony:   Taylor Park, 78 Main St., Millburn. The ceremony will take place at the Sept. 11 Memorial at Taylor Park, and plans  include a bagpiper, Chatham Brass, clergy and a few words from Mayor Sandy Haimoff.

The Chatham Brass will start playing around 3:50 p.m. to welcome attendees and will play again at the end of the service.

LIVINGSTON:

8:30 a.m. and 10: 30 a.m. 9/11 Services of Remembrance at The Crossing Church: 222 Laurel Ave., Livingston. The Crossing Church will hold two services on September 11th in memory of those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in 2001. Adorning the church property will be 3,000 American flags and the services will feature special music while focusing on remembrance and hope. The entire community is welcome.

10:30 a.m. Presbyterian Church of Livingston remembers 9/11: 271 W. Northfield Road, Livingston.  Fallen heroes and victims will be remembered and honored during a special service including the lighting of the candle of remembrance and special readings.

7:00 p.m. Ceremony of Remembrance: The Oval’s Memorial Park, 10 Robert H. Harp Drive, Livingston. The Township of Livingston will remember the Livingston residents whose lives were taken with a performance by the Livingston High School Chorus, speakers including Mayor Rudy Fernandez, a reading of names while the bell tolls, and thoughts from local families.

7 p.m. Temple Emanu-El of West Essex Men’s Club presents a concert with The Maccabeats, 264 W. Northfield Road. A Jewish singing group that has performed all around the country, the Maccabeats presents an eclectic array of Jewish, American, and Israeli songs.

MAPLEWOOD:

10:30 a.m. 9/11 Service of Remembrance and Restoration: Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood.  Morrow Memorial is set to mark the occasion by opening its doors to the community for  a service of remembrance and restoration with a meditation on transforming ourselves and our communities through forgiveness. The program will include poetry, music, and scripture, in addition to Rev. Heckert’s message, titled "Transformed through Forgiveness."

Noon 9/11 Walk: A Simple Act of Hope and Courage: Morrow Memorial United Methodist Church, 600 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood.  9/11 Walks is a national effort to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11. All are invited to walk and talk kindly with neighbors and strangers in celebration of our common humanity and in defiance of fear, misunderstanding and hatred, honoring the victims of 9/11 with a simple act of hope and courage.

2:00 p.m. Maplewood Remembers:  Maplewood Memorial Library Hilton Branch, 1688 Springfield Ave., Maplewood. The Township of Maplewood is sponsoring an afternoon of music, readings and patriotic singing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the dedication of the WTC Monument.

7:15 p.m. Come Together: a 9/11 Community Sing Along: Memorial Park, 124 Dunnell Road, Maplewood. Bring your families, friends, voices and instruments and come play, sing or listen.  The lyrics and chords will be projected for all to join along. The musical procession begins at Ricalton Square at 7:15 p.m., with the sing-along beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Amphitheater.

SOUTH ORANGE:

8:30 a.m. Commemoration and Prayer: The Christopher Faughnan Memorial at New Waterlands Field, 28 3rd St., South Orange. 

9:58 a.m. In Memorium:  South Orange Fire Department, 56 Sloan St., South Orange. As part of South Orange's 9/11 Commemoration, there will be a ceremony at the Fire House with a moment of silence at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited into the Fire House after the ceremony.

10:30 a.m. Memorial Interfaith Service of Remembrance and Hope: The Episcopal Church of Saint Andrew & Holy Communion, 160 W South Orange Ave., South Orange.  An interfaith service led by The Reverend Canon Dr. Sandye Wilson, Rabbi Francine Roston and Imam Abdul Amin will remember those who gave their lives, the many families and friends affected, and pray with hope for healing and reconciliation. 

Noon  Commemoration in Film: South Orange Performing Arts Center, 1 Trenchard Place, South Orange. As part of South Orange's 9/11 Commemoration, SOPAC will host a free Commemoration in Film from noon to 6:00 p.m.

1:00 p.m.  National Moment of Remembrance: Village Hall, 101 S. Orange Ave, South Orange. As part of South Orange's 9/11 Commemoration, the entire Village will observe a National Moment of Remembrance at 1:00 p.m.

2:00 p.m. South Orange Library Events: South Orange Public Library, 65 Scotland Road, South Orange. As part of South Orange's 9/11 Commemoration, the Library will host a special Children's Storytime, celebrating everyday heroes, followed by solos by the Youth Orchestras of Essex County.  At 3:30 p.m. Assemblywoman Mila Jasey will speak on "Communities."

6:15 p.m. Candlelight Vigil: South Orange Performing Arts Center, 1 Trenchard Place, South Orange. As part of South Orange's 9/11 Commemoration, there will be musical interlude at 6:15 p.m., followed by a program with Alex Torpey, Village president, Village Trustees, clergy, guest speakers and music.

WEST ORANGE: 

8:00 a.m. Annual Essex Remembers 9/11 Observance: Eagle Rock Reservation, 21 Calvin Terrace, West Orange. Essex County will dedicate a 7,400-pound piece of steel and concrete from the World Trade Center at the Memorial Site, with a solemn observance commemorating the people we lost and the events of the 9/11 Tragedy.  Chamber music will at the site until 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. t0 9:00 p.m.

6:15 p.m.  9/11 Memorial Service of Healing: Oskar Schindler Perfoming Arts Center, 4 Boland Dr, West Orange.  The evening will begin with music by the West Orange High School band and string quartet, followed by comments by the mayor.  Local clergy will speak and people from the community will share their 9/11 stories.  Local Eagle Scouts will conduct the flag raising. There will be a candlelight vigil at dusk.
