Same Story, Different Year for Millburn Tennis
Miller girls tennis team captures fourth consecutive Group 3 championship
For the fourth consecutive year the Miller girls are the queens of Group 3 tennis.
The Millburn girls defeated Holmdel 5-0 for the four-peat Wednesday at Mercer County Park in West Windsor. The team earned a spot in the final six for the Tournament of Champions, which begins Sunday.
“I’m happy to win today. Today’s match was a barnburner. We got two points and we didn’t know if we were going to get a third,” said head coach Elliot Lovi.
Co-captains Sabrina Fedele and Emily Bary along with the first doubles team of Jenna Berkenkamp and Patricia Chau came up huge for Millburn, taking wins in both the semis and the finals.
“I think they played well, I think they played well under pressure,” Fedele said of her team. “I know a lot of them were nervous, but they seemed to excel despite that. I thought they were all very tough. I mean we went into three three-set matches and we pulled them all out, so I’m proud of them for doing well even though some of them are young.”
Chau and Berkenkamp found themselves down after the first set when Holmdel’s duo of Jessica Sher and Gayatri Iyengar came out very aggressively, taking a 7-5 win. Millburn was ahead 4-3 before Holmdel stormed back.
Chau and Berkenkamp, however, must have figured something out in between sets because the freshman-sophomore tandem won the next two sets, dropping just one game in the second. The win gave Millburn three points and propelled them to the Tournament of Champions.
“In the first set we just didn’t get it together and we kept on missing shots that we probably shouldn’t have missed,” Chau said. “Then the next set, we decided to start over. We started coming to the net and putting things away.”
“We wanted to be more aggressive, so we had to move in to the net, so movement was a big factor for us. I think that’s what we tried to work on more in the second and third sets,” Berkenkamp said.
Fedele, who has not dropped a set this season, aside from the state singles tournament held two weeks ago, was once again dominant. Playing with No. 1 stuff in the No. 2 slot, Fedele was lights out, dropping just three games between the semis and the finals. She was not even blemished in the semis against Ramapo, winning 6-0 in both sets, and lost a game in each set to Caitlin Yip.
“I thought I was playing smart. I was kind of tight today,” Fedele said. “I was just wanted to play smart out there. I didn’t want to murder the ball, I wanted to make as few unforced errors as possible.”
“Sabrina is a rock. She’s a leader without saying boo. She’s just a tremendous leader,” Lovi said.
The senior captain has won a Group 3 championship all four years that she has been on varsity, something that could have only been done by a four-year starter from 1978-1981, the last and only other time the Millburn girls have won four consecutive Group 3 titles.
“That feels fantastic. I’m really glad that I’ve been able to contribute for four years in a row,” she said. “This was my best year and my easiest year.”
Miller first singles starter Alex Stone lost in the semifinals to Ramapo’s Amanda Muliawan, the reigning state singles champion, but bounced back to take a three setter against Karolina Wojciak in the finals. It seems she simply outlasted Wojciak based on the score progression. Stone won 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.
Sara Fielder and Lauren Cohen at second doubles for Millburn might have won two matches, but because of time constraints their semifinal match was called a draw, tied at a set a piece and three games each in the final set. Millburn had already gotten the three points necessary to advance. In the final match, after winning the first set 6-2, the Holmdel girls fought back in the second set, pulling out the 7-5 win to force a third set.
Millburn found itself down 4-0 in the third set, but rallied from behind for six consecutive points, to take the set and match, 6-4.
For Millburn, this is the team’s 10th Group 3 title since 1978 and their 15th group championship overall, as they won five group titles in Group 2. The girls will be making their tenth appearance in the Tournament of Champions, the most in state history.

I should also add that Emily Bary won her first match against Ramapo 6-0, 6-1, and won 6-2, 6-1 versus Holmdel.
