Seven Residents Seek Open Seat on School Board

Candidates will vie for seat on the Millburn Board of Education that has been empty since Jean Pasternak resigned at the Feb. 11 board meeting.

Seven residents will vie for the open seat on the Millburn Board of Education, the office of the district's business administrator said Tuesday.

The board will appoint a resident to fill the open seat at the April 11 meeting, school board president Jeffrey Waters explained at the Feb. 25 meeting.

The seat has been empty since Jean Pasternak resigned to focus on family matters at the Feb. 11 board meeting.

At the Monday, March 11 meeting, the candidates will have the opportunity to explain why they are interested in serving on the board and their qualifications, Waters added.

The following residents have submitted letters of interest to Business Administrator Steve DiGeronimo:

  • Lucinda Mercer
  • Jane Greenwald
  • John Westfall-Kwong
  • Jay Mattlin
  • Emily Jaffe
  • Milton Resnick
  • Kalani Thielen

The deadline to apply for the open seat was Wednesday Feb. 27 at 4 p.m.

K : who do you think would be the rubber stamper? How do people feel about a candidate whom voters rejected being appointed? Is he better candidate because he showed earlier interest? Or should BOE consider past election results in the equation? Of course now that community can't vote on the budget anymore his stated budget approach should fit with current administration/BOE.

I'M HOPING FOR EMILY JAFFE TO TAKE THE SEAT!

Of the seven candidates, I only know of 2 ppl. It really should be about who shows up and who puts themselves out there to contribute to our community. And of course, what they bring to the table! I know John Westfall-Kwong has co-chaired the data and research committee for the district's strategic planning efforts, a huge undertaking and he should be commended. I also know that "EMILY JAFFE" has gone to almost EVERY school board meeting this year! She is informed, has a strong finance background, educated at Wharton, and has 3 young kids that will attend our schools for many years to come. She too serves on the Strategic Action Planning Teams (as do I)! The other 5 people, I have never met. Good luck to the Board who will be deciding!
