The Millburn Patch needs a permanent editor dedicated to Millburn.

Marcia: No need to discuss, but this is not newsworthy for Millburn. The Patch is not nj.com and is starting to post news relevant to other towns. We need a Millburn-centric editor.

I got this from my Montclair Patch and found it of local interest. My simple view is that "local" touches the bounds of our community. For many in Essex County, saying Ms. Hill is from "around the way" is always fun. With that, the prof in Montclair says thank you for posting this.

Local cannot be so limiting as to never step past the bounds of a single community. So long as most of the posts here concern "local" issues, I'm fine with a few national, international, or like here, outer community news.

I don't think its an editor issue. Most likely an issue with how the site is constructed when stories are listed as "BREAKING:"

I concur with J S Beckerman! The Millburn-Short Hills Patch seems to be getting more and more "watered down." How about a story interviewing the Police Chief, School Supt. etc. or new businesses opening downtown (there are several others in addition to the one you just reported?) If I'm interested in hearing about what is going on in South Orange, I can read their Patch.

It's not so bad that there are regional or state stories. But I think there should be headers -- say, In Millburn, In the Region, In the State -- differentiated with designated colors, to signal for each article what it covers.

You all should allow the patches to evolve - too much restrictions will cause a good thing to die on the vibe. If you don't like an article or Breaking news then ignore it or don't read it through. My BLackBerry as never bothered me - I am the one picking it up. I am sure jou get the point. Always remember tolerance of others - including whatever they briing to the table is not only a reflection on your intellect, but the wellspring of good dialogue and comunial growth. Enjoy your summer and don't allow trivialities to spoil the fun - what we think as individual is always worthwhile but usually not paramount.

This is a national story because Lauryn Hill is a celebrity that happens to be from Essex County. I applaud the Patch for posting it.

I'm with Jeff on this one-we probably have many tax cheats in town that would be of far greater interest than Hill

Supressing the news is always a bad option - news is news Breaking or Broken - let's not thwart the will of the silent many to satisfy most vocal few.
Suggestion:
To accomodate some - a color coded designation of breaking news may me a contributary solution towards the unyielding arc of not stopping catalytic dialogue.

Deciding whether or not a story is "local" or not is certainly not "suppressing" news. Here, Ms. Hill's tax confession was everywhere. If Patched had deemed it non-local enough, it could not be accused of suppressing it.

Moreover, with the many media outlets, to suppress a story will take the agreement of such a vast group of folks, all with varied interests, I think it's hard to see something like Kennedy's back problems or "lady" problems not getting out today. Ask John Edwards if anything was suppressed (though the mainstream media did ignore it, thankfully the National Enquirer did not).

And the Gov asking the media to not report on an element of a story for "national security" is not suppressing.

(I also realize that Patch is competing for eyes and page views with a few other local blogs. So making something "breaking" might have as much to do with having a story first in the local blog wars than anything else.)

There is a much better source for local Millburn-Short Hills news and that is The Alternative Press. Patch is now full of silly polls that mean nothing and regional not local news. About the only thing worthwhile for me any more are the open house listings on Saturday and the real estate closings on Sunday.

If the construct is blinkered and selective by geography to determine appropriate broken news - the go ahead use your option of choice apply your own filters - you don't have to read it Breaking or Broken - your preference should not deprive me of mine.

M. Moore..................I agree. If one's goal is to find a venue which focuses on local Millburn-Short Hills news, The Alternative Press seems to be a better option!

I hope the judge has mercy on Lauryn Hill and that she won't have to serve any jail time, but a hefty fine instead. I wonder if she has filed taxes since 2007. If so, maybe the judge will show some leniency.

I agree with Denise, if Lauryn Hill is allowed to work and increase her tour schedule she will not only please her fans, but more importantly be allowed to earn the money to pay her back taxes and whatever fine is ruled fair and just. Why put a women with six children in jail, as a punishment, when the alternative will benefit the government and so many others. She is being punished for being a celebrity and a local woman who has had a brilliant music career. She gave it up to raise her children and that is to be commended.

I Understand Short Hills is about 5 min away from South Orange. It's a great story, keep it up!!!!!!!
