Storm May Bring Region Only 2 Inches of Snow
Precipitation expected to begin Wednesday, linger until Thursday, meteorologist says.
What many hope will be the final snowfall of the winter season is expected to be mild in accumulation but heavy in wind gusts, according to the National Weather Service.
A low-pressure system making its way through the Mid-Atlantic is approaching New Jersey and will bring approximately two inches of precipitation to the northern portion of the state Wednesday through Thursday, National Weather Service meteorologist Mitchell Gaines said.
Snowfall is expected to begin early Wednesday, then mix with rain in the afternoon and return to snow by night, Gaines said.
Winds will gust between 20 and 25 miles-per-hour, Gaines said, but could climb to as high as 40 miles-per-hour at times. Lingering rainfall will end by Thursday morning, Gaines said.

But with only two inches of snow, how will the plow drivers block all of our driveways with a three foot high layer of ice?

The issue is not with the guys who drive the trucks, it's with whoever makes the decision to send the trucks out when there's only an inch of snow on the road, and it'll probably be melted by the next day. Same goes for those who decide to close the schools before one snowflake of snow has even fallen.

The WO DPW can still drive around all night racking up that overtime, can't they? It may just be their last chance this season.

@Status Quo. I'm a little surprised you feel this way. I understand the criticism of DPW workers but I feel like the WO ones work pretty hard. With the amount of trees we have in this town, leaf removal is a colossal effort. Yes, they have ripped up my lawn with their machinery and I have gone out there complaining on a few occasions, but I still can't deny them the effort it takes to do a clean up. We also have a lot of parks and they are pretty well maintained. Our garbage cans are never overflowing like I see in other towns. I have even seen them in a boat hauling weeds out of the pond by the O'Conner park. Graffiti is cleaned up pretty quickly. I think we might be one of the luckier towns in NJ and have a pretty good DPW department. And we deserve it because we also have high property taxes but I'll give credit where credit is due.

@MSS: I can't really disagree, but a lot of the work you cited is contracted out (http://bit.ly/WRZAgT). There's a pretty expensive garbage collection contract with Roselle, too. It's just the Patch.

Yes, you who have never plowed, let alone plowed for oh say 18 hours or more straight know exactly what you are talking about. Trust when I tell you, these guys would rather be home in bed or on the internet judging things they know nothing about like all of you than "racking up that overtime".

I'm calling you on that one, Tammy.
I used to be in the TV business and there were occasions (storms--when people couldn't make it in--and big stories or the NCAA tourney) where we could work 24 hours or more at a clip or a bunch of consecutive 18-hour days.
Yeah, we bitched about the "blood money" but loved the check at the end of the week.
A decent OT check is a nice little bonus and makes you forget about how much you had to work to get it.

Jazzman you are out of your mind. I don't know what caused your beef with the DPW but your statements couldn't be farther from the truth. Do you have a cell phone with camera capabilities? How about you start posting some pictures to back up your claims. Mr. Brooks, I didn't say the money wasn't appreciated. I said they'd rather be home which is the truth. Home Owner, I would like you to also provide photographic proof of them sleeping on their regular shit the next day. If this is such easy money, if it's truly no big deal to do the work they do, if they get paid for taking naps than why aren't you all applying for the job? According to you all you'd get rich for very little work.

But, Tammy, if you want to make money, staying home in bed isn't the way to do it.
I'd like to stay home and make money, but that's not the way it works. And the OT checks are a big help. And, finally, baloney, they love the money like everyone else.

Hey Jazzman-My first husband worked for Hopatcong DPW our entire 10 year marriage. My brother also worked for the Hopatcong DPW for many years. The man I am married to now works for the Randolph DPW for well over 20 years. I'd say that qualifies me to know a little bit about it. If you can't get a picture because you can never see them then how do you know what they are or are not doing? Mr. Brooks, I never said they didn't like the money. However, after a long winter and after many years of plowing it gets old and yes, they'd rather do without the money.

Unless you are the one out there in all types of weather, doing the work to keep the roads safe for the public, I think you need to keep your mouth shut! DPW workers are the least appreciated and yet they do work the hardest. Sure there are days when they aent too busy, but there are days when they work like dogs, just like everyone else!
Thank you DPW workers, for that matter most public workers for all the CR@p you put up with, not like the politicans who are out there for photo ops!

So Macy, I assume that when you go to a restaurant, you never criticize the food or service since you're not the one cooking and serving the food? When you get your car serviced, you never criticize the work done since you're not the one actually doing the work? In short, for any service that you pay for, you always keep your mouth shut since you're not the one doing the work???
I love how we taxpayers are constantly told that we have not right to criticize the police force or DPW crew that we pay for with our money.
Tammy

FourScore, Of course you can criticize where it's warranted. What is not fair (and I'm not accusing you) is to make statements without facts or evidence to back them up. Most of these keyboard commandos wouldn't last 12 hours in a plow truck never mind 20 or more and then continue on with their regular shift. I'm not talking about a Ford F250 with a plow either. I'm talking about a real plow truck.

The DPW men in Parsippany, I believe we are on Parsippany Patch, the men that collect our Garbage, Recycle, Cardboard, Yard waste, etc. are the same men that salt and plow our roads. It seems the same people that complain about the job they do are the same people that would complain it they weren't doing it. I am thankful that they try to keep the roads safe for all of us.

The main streets are cleared very quickly, I do think the side roads should receive more salt as they tend to be very slick.

I couldn't care less how DPW workers in western Idaho handle their jobs. I do, however, care how DPW workers in Wayne, NJ do their jobs. The big difference - and the very thing that gives me the right to judge how they do those jobs - is that the Wayne DPW workers are being paid out of my taxes. Whatever industry you're in, your clients and customers have a right to expect a certain level of work performance from you by virtue of the fact that they're paying you. The idea that you shouldn't criticize anyone who is doing a job that you could've done but aren't doing is absurd.

@Kean09, your comment is actually demeaning to all DPW workers. Not everyone can become a town worker, there are some skills involved. A person who enjoys an office job might not necessarily enjoy a job where he is exposed to the elements. If I am unhappy with my doctor, would the solution be for me to go to medical school?

I question a lot of what goes on in Maplewood... but when it snows like it has snowed and I see how quickly the roads are cleared, I feel better about my taxes. I mean... I'd love to pay LESS... but man, these guys seem to do a pretty good job out there. Just my 2 cents. I was in Nayak NY a couple of days after Christmas this year, and it started to snow heavily. I was slipping and sliding all over the roads and highways in NY. As SOON as I crossed into NJ, the roads were sanded and salted... and Maplewood's streets were nice and clear by the time we got home. As to the original comment about blocking the driveway with 3 feet of ice... I am assuming that was just a joke. We grew up with that situation... no sooner did you shovel out the bottom of the driveway than a plow came by and filled it again. That's just life. There are worse things.

Well, would you look at that. We have a discerning reader!
Yes, it was a joke, but as with all decently crafted jokes it's one with a kernel of truth embedded within. We've had only one large snowstorm this Winter but the driveway situation made me very glad I own a large two stage snowblower. So were the neighbors whose driveway entrances I cleared.

@ M S S.. Not at all meant to be demeaning.. Making a point that we all have a choice of our future or employment and that people always have something to say about how others do the job no matter what it is, however they don't want to do it themselves.. I have many friends who work for DPW. I know how hard it is to be out in the heat or cold, DPW workers get alot of dirty jobs..
