Reality Check: JCP&L Street-by-Street Restoration List

Is JCP&L's estimated restoration list accurate for your street? Power company says all power will be restored by Saturday.

The Township of Millburn has received the street-by-street power restoration listing officials have been asking for from Jersey Central Power & Light.

To see when the company says your street is expected to get power, go to the town website. According to the list, the company estimates that all homes should have power back by Saturday. Currently, according to the power company's website, 321 homes remain powerless.

Residents, who've been without power since Saturday's snowstorm, say they've been told by crews from as far away as Michigan and Alabama that they could not work on their homes until a privately hired electrician repairs connections at their houses.

And JCP&L's website says the the same thing, letting residents know that they need to hire electricians to repair damaged connections first.

Patch has also uploaded a PDF of the street-by-street list, but use the link to the township site if the PDF is difficult to read.

Mayor Sandy Haimoff cautions that the list might not be accurate because she's gotten a lot of misinformation from the company - what headquarters releases is not always what is happening in the neighborhoods.

If your power is out but the list says it's on or your power goes out again, call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877). It’s the only way JCP&L knows your power is out.

Also, as always, please share with us what's going on in your neighborhood.

This list says that my street was supposed to have power on Nov 3 and we still do not have power. Does anyone know who we should call?

Clearly the list might not be accurate. We want to know that! Thank you for posting. Just added the number to the story: Call 1-888-LIGHTSS (1-888-544-4877).

My street isn't on the list and I am the only house without power (tree fell and took out our line). I just called First Energy AGAIN and was told the order for the house was cancelled. Apparently it could have been cancelled because they called me and I didn't answer (I have no phone service with the power out, so how am I supposed to answer?), or it could have been cancelled by the workers once they know what needs to be done. Given everything that has gone on, I am not certain that the workers will even come. So, the order was put back on the account, and they are "estimating" by midnight on Saturday, but as usual, they say that's "only an estimate, it could be later". Just great....

Now I know why Jcpl didn't want to provide this info. The list looks like a random compilation of dates. Many streets with power (as of wednesday) are listed as being restored today or tomorrow. I wouldn't rely on this data at all. I just hope that everyone in town gets their power today, like they originally estimated. Laura, thanks for the great reporting this week. You've been our primary source of information and community blog, all in one. Thanks!

Even though there are inaccuracies and mis-estimates on this chart, I also do see that it includes estimates for YESTERDAY and we're just getting this TODAY when we were told YESTERDAY by our Congressman's office that our township had gotten this already. Don't mean to be yelling in CAPS, I just don't know who to believe anymore. I also brought the Springfield street-by-street restoration up to Robert Tillotson yesterday morning and he was led to believe (so I'm not blaming him) that the way our power grid is structured, it was potentially not possible to do street-by-street restoration projections. I followed up via email alerting him and Tim Gordon to it yesterday at 10am and didn't hear back until I followed up again this morning and got the link sent to me that Laura shared above. I've since followed up asking when our township did receive this because after all is said and done with the incompetence of JCP&L, we need to address communication in our town. Thanks again to Laura and the Patch for everything they're doing.

Unfortunately it's not part of the problem...IT IS THE PROBLEM.
Mismanagement and misguided resources - both by JCPL and Millburn/Short Hills Township

Keep this information coming! Residents know what's happening on their streets, or at least on their blocks, in real time, and that's more helpful than a list of estimates.

I just confirmed that our township did get this information YESTERDAY and we just get it TODAY even though we've been asking for information and told it doesn't exist. Even some information or communication like this would've put our minds a little more at ease (even understanding the chart can contain inaccuracies and mis-estimates which it totally does). Why do we have to pull teeth from our government?

I received a "robo" call yesterday, Nov. 3rd, saying that power was restored on our street. However, it was not. The list also states that power was to have been restored yesterday.

The list is utterly worthless and downright misleading. Many streets have 2-3 dates when power is coming on. Not helpful. Best bet to get your power back is to move to livingston mall parking lot. Another question for inquiring minds - why oh why are there a cadre of town employees at the town dump doing absolutely utterly nothing except picking through our garbage so they can sell it/take it for their own benefit. why aren't they out there in the dumptrucks which are also sitting idle on town property? is it a. because they can make more money selling our stuff on e-bay? b. because they are lazy? c. because union rules prohibit them from working too hard , d. to drive a dumptruck would require paying them overtime which we can't afford or e. since the teachers are picketing at the public schools, the town workers don't want to cross the picket line. talk amongst yourselves people...

They are working on Barnsdale Road now. I have been without power since Saturday, early afternoon. When I called JCPL they informed me I was the first to call. Somehow I lost power first and a couple of hours later so did many Barnsdale Road residents. But we must be on different grids because my next door neighbor never lost power and doesn't have a generator. Well, back to the hotel and hopefully they restore power before too long.

We are on Northern Dr and it says our power was restored yesterday, however it is still not on. There are only a few of us on the street without power which makes me think we are not a priority.

I LOVE THIS LIST!!! This is the greatest thing JCPL could have produced for us. Now, when one of our legal smart residents (anyone, please...we know you're out there) develops a kick-a** class action suit against JCPL they will be able to use this document as proof that JCPL has no idea what they were talking about throughout the crisis. Would venture a guess that 70-80% of the streets listed are wrong as to when power would be or has been restored.

Want to know why we're still in the dark (literally)...take a trip to the Livingston mall and watch crews of repair teams sitting and waiting for a leader from JCPL to lead.

**** MAYOR - TOWN COUNCIL RECALL? ****

I ask this question in all seriousness - is anyone familiar with the process to recall the Mayor and the Town Council.

It might be something residents should consider "exploring" as a township.

I would imagine this could be a huge undertaking that would require many many hours of manpower and money to be effective. Also assume people would need to volunteer to go door to door to get signatures to sign a recall petition.

What's the process - just curious. Like to know options before this happens again and possibly with much more serious consequences.

Voters may initiate a referendum, is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal. It is a form of direct democracy.

This vignette about sums up my impression of JCP&L -- I live near the hanging wire on Hobart near South Terrace/Taylor Rd. The wire was live since Saturday; the homes attached did not lose power. The wire was dangling dangerously and had been unattended between Sat and Wed. On Thursday morning at 7a.m. I noted 2 JCP&L trucks sitting on Hobart/Taylor with engines running but workers in trucks. I went for a walk and an hour later one truck with engine running with worker in truck was still there. Nothing had been done to repair the wire. Finally about 3 pm, still observing no activity, I decided to ask the worker if they would be working on the wire that day. He politely informed me he was guarding the wire because it was live and JCP&L didn't want anyone to get near it...he did not know if the wire would be fixed on Thursday. He did not seem to see the irony that the wire had been live and unattended since Sat through Wed. He was a young guy just doing the work he was assigned. I am grateful to have my electricity back on as of Thurs evening. The Hobart Ave wire in question was fixed midday on Friday. But residents please know JCP&L was guarding the wire and looking out for your safety 1 day out of the 6 days it was down.

Many people seem to be misreading the list. It refers to separate ORDER NUMBERS. Those are probably actual reports called in by residents, each of which has its own repair estimate. That estimate could differ depending on what the problem is or even when the report was made and the priority it was given behind other reports. I don't think this tells us anything about when *entire blocks* will be restored, nor does it guarantee that your problem will be fixed at the same time if you are not on the same order or did not report the problem in the first place. I'm not affiliated with JCP&L but that seems to me to be the reasonable way to read the document and also explains why there are different dates for the same street and also the inconsistencies between the document and what's happening on each street as reported in these comments. The good news, if there is any, is that there is no order estimated past November 5, which is the original date JCP&L said every customer would be restored. Let's see if that holds true.

Sure would like to know how they set these dates? I live on Glen Avenue at the corner of Glenhill Lane. Glen Avenue shows up four times on the list with restoration dates of November 3, 4 and 5, while Glenhill Lane is there with a November 4 date. I'm not there, but my husband just got home and told me that we still don't have power. I know this was a bad storm but it does seem like Millburn/Short Hills is among the last to get full power back.

I live on Sinclair Terrace and fortunately, we have had our power on almost the whole time. However, a live wire is down across the street on the reservation side of our street which supplies a street lamp. Someone hung a yellow ribbon on it as a precaution not to mess with the many downed branches, trees, etc entangling it which extends into the street. Tuesday night there were power trucks here from out of state, used search lights in that area as if they were assessing the downed wires and spent the next day restoring power to the homes in the area without power. I assumed that they would fix the downed wire once all the homes in the area were back up since this must have been a low priority. They rode past the area multiple times on Wednesday and even a few times Thursday, left the area and did not repair the downed wire. It is still down and I assume it is live since I have to reason to believe otherwise. The entangled brush, tree limbs and hangers that are in that area are creating a hazard for the traffic on our street. I realize that this is not a well traveled street but there are people who park on this street to access the reservation as well as the residents of the street who use the road. The 'herbaceous materials' cannot be moved off the street until the wires are repaired. I am feeling like we are stuck in a Catch 22 here until the workers return--whenever that might be!
