Superintendent Search Meetings Slated for October
The candidate could be announced on Feb. 22.
The Millburn School District could have a finalist for the schools superintendent slot in February with a vote expected in April.
Sam Levy, Board of Education Search Committee chairman, outlined the schedule for the superintendent search during Monday's board meeting. The finalist candidate is expected to be announced on Feb. 22, and the board would vote on appointing the finalist on April 26.
Schools Supt. Richard Brodow announced last spring he intends to retire in June after eight years with the school district.
Additionally, the search firm hired to assist with the process—Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates—will be in Millburn-Short Hills on Oct. 12-13 to conduct interviews with groups of constituents. The firm will also hold two open meetings.
Levy said the goal of the meetings is to collect information to create a leadership profile. The profile, which will be presented at a meeting on Nov. 16, will be used to interview superintendent candidates.
The groups that the search firm will interview are:
- Superintendent and assistant superintendent for curriculum.
- Assistant superintendent for business, director of grounds and public information officer.
- Senior administrators, cabinet level administrators, athletics director, high school guidance counselor and middle school guidance counselor.
- Principals (broken into two groups).
- Assistant principals.
- Millburn Education Association representatives (14 to be nominated).
- Student Leadership from the Student Liaison Committee
- PTO Members (16 to be nominated)
- Special Education Parent Committee (16 to be nominated)
- Former Board of Education members
- Director of special services
- Board of Education members
- Community Committee (comprised of 18 people)
There will also be two large groups open to others not included in the smaller groups. All teachers and staff will have a meeting at 3:30-5 p.m. on Oct. 12. The community and parent meeting will be held on Oct. 13 from 8-11 p.m. at Millburn High School.
Following the leadership profile presentation, the search firm will screen candidates between Nov. 17 and Jan. 17. A candidate slate will be presented to the Board of Education on Jan. 11.
The school board will interview candidates on Jan. 15-17 and identify the semi-finalists by Jan. 17. The semi-finalists will be interviewed Jan. 19-21. The board will identify the finalist on Jan. 22.
The school board will hold site visits on Jan. 27-29, and the finalist will visit Millburn on Feb. 8.
Levy said there could be some deviation from the schedule.
