The Weekend: Story Slam, HarvestFest, Doo Wop and Star Trek Live

Local entertainment for the entire family

 

Halloween is just around the corner, and fall activities are all over town. Enjoy Maplewood’s HarvestFest, or paint pumpkins at Express Yourself Studios. Look for creatures of the night by flashlight at the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum. If your idea of a good time requires music, consider the Doo Wop concert at the Paper Mill Playhouse, or Columbia High School’s Italian Dinner and Music Night. Also this weekend are Story Slam, Star Trek Live, and the premiere of Dreamcatcher’s Next Fall. Studio B STORY SLAM

Calling all writers! Break out your best five-minute story for the crowd (including literary agents) at the Burgdorff, and possibly win the prize. Featuring live music from alt country band Bloomfield. Over 21 only — there will be beer served (but not for free!). Maplewood’s Third Annual HarvestFest

HarvestFest is back! Fun for the entire family is in store, including a classic car show, pony and hay rides, Polka Dot and Pals, face painting, a petting zoo, music and much more. Dreamcatcher Presents New Jersey Premier of "Next Fall"  

Next Fall opens Friday night at The Baird. The serious topics of faith, family and love are addressed in a surprisingly funny way in this play by Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre. Prepare to laugh, cry and applaud. $30 for adults and $25 for seniors and students; Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.; South Orange

Star Trek Live

Prepare to be swept into space as part of the newly formed Starfleet Academy – you have Romulans to repel! This interactive show combines film, theater and audience participation for an unforgettable afternoon of science fiction action. A Night Of Doo Wop and Rock & Roll II

The Paper Mill Playhouse will be rockin’ this weekend with a doo wop/rock & roll show.  Featured performers include Lenny Welch with “Since I Fell For You” and “Ebb Tide”; the favorite girls group Barbara Harris and The Toys with “A Lover’s Concerto” and “Attack”; The Vogues with Bill Burkett and Hugh Geyer in “Five O’Clock World,” “You’re the One,” and “Turn Around, Look at Me”; Tony Passa, original lead of the Fascinators, in “Chapel Bells”; Steve Horn of the Five Sharks with “Stormy Weather”; Frank Mancuso of The Imaginations with “Guardian Angel”; Tommy Mara, current lead of The Crests, in “Sixteen Candles” and “The Angels Listened In”; plus The Solid Gold Band with a salute to our Armed Forces. Italian Dinner & Music Night

The Italian Cultural Club at Columbia High School will host an evening of music performed by students and adults, accompanying delicious food provided by The Corner Shop Gourmet Deli of South Orange. This fundraiser will support the club’s activities, with some of the proceeds going to charity. Adults $25.00, Students $15.00; Friday at 6 p.m.; Maplewood

Creatures of the Night

Who sleeps at night, and who is out prowling in the dark? The Cora Hartshorn Arboretum staff and Environmental Eagles will lead tours by flashlight through the woodlands of the arboretum to discover creatures of the night. While you wait for your tour to begin, enjoy crafts and refreshments in the Stone House.  $10 per person. Children under 2 free; Friday at 7 p.m.; Short Hills

Pumpkin Painting - Express Yourself Studios

Express yourself on a pumpkin — create a work of art for the Halloween season!  Children of all ages are invited to paint pumpkins, participate in face painting and enjoy treats at Express Yourself Studios.  $10; Saturday at 11 a.m.; Maplewood
