The Weekender: Memorial Day

What's there to do in and around town this weekend.

The last weekend in May brings us the unofficial start of summer.

This week marks the first Millburn-Short Hills Restaurant Week, where discounts will be available at many of the town's hot spots. Many restaurants are taking part and there will be prix fix menus as well as discounts. Participants include Rockn' Joe of Millburn, Café Monet, Benihana, Short Hills Pizza and many more. For more information visit here. Restaurant week closes on Sunday.

Monday marks Memorial Day and what better way to celebrate the holiday than with a parade? Millburn Township's Memorial Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. at the Short Hills Train Station and end at Taylor Park. Memorial services will be held at 9:15 a.m. at St. Stephen's Cemetery and at 9:45 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. A ceremony also will follow the parade in Taylor Park.

At the New Jersey Arts Incubator Friday, there will be a night of Celtic Celebration with Blackwater and Slight Imperfection performing. It features Millburn resident Odarka Stockert. The concert will take place in the court yard of Essex Green, right outside the Incubator, weather permitting. Though entrance is free, there is a suggested donation of $10.  You can learn more about the bands here and here.

Looking to do something with your dog this weekend? Saturday at 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., take your dog on a walk through the South Mountain Reservation led by Lou Nocito. The walk will start at the dog park. Remember to bring a leash and bags to clean up after your pet. More information is here.

On Monday, the historical Ely Cemetery in Livingston will be open at 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cemetery has many historical graves, dating as far back as 1777, including that of its namesake Captain William Ely. The cemetery is located on 30 Hillside Ave. and admission is free.
