The Weekender: The Symphony, Dancers and the Black Stallion

Patch picks for Your entertainment for the coming weekend.

 

Artists are out in force this weekend!  Musicians, dancers, and writers will perform for your entertainment at a variety of shows this weekend.

The students of I.Dance will strut their stuff, and a djembe class will get you directly involved in making the music. The children’s classic film, The Black Stallion, is showing for free in Millburn. If you prefer to take advantage of the mild weather, enjoy the great outdoors at Edison Historical Park, or join the hike at South Mountain Reservation. The Black Stallion: Classics for Kids at the Millburn Library

The Millburn Public Library will present a free screening of The Black Stallion, starring Kelly Reno, Mickey Rooney and Teri Garr. This G-rated classic film tells the story of a young boy’s adventures with a magnificent black stallion – from a dramatic shipwreck to a racing championship. Pauline Kael of NY Magazine said in a review of the film, “it may be the greatest children’s movie ever made.” Free; Saturday at 1 p.m.; Millburn

South Orange Symphony Concert

The South Orange Symphony performs several free concerts each year to bring quality musical performances to South Orange, Maplewood and the surrounding communities. This weekend at South Orange Middle School, the symphony will perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 35, Morton Gould’s American Salute, Danse Bacchanale from Samson et Dalila, and more. Free; Sunday at 3 p.m.; South Orange

Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. No experience is required to participate. Thomas Edison National Historical Park will also host a formal talk about Mina Edison and her bird watching, and a Ranger-led walk around the Glenmont Estate each day at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.  $7 for Adults, Children under 16 years are free; Saturday and Sunday 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; West Orange

Carnevale 

Carnevale is a traditional festival held just prior to the beginning of Lent in many Catholic regions. The Knights of Columbus Council #3533 will host a Carnevale celebration, complete with an open bar, full buffet and DJ entertainment, to which the public is invited. Build A Birdhouse

To commemorate National Nest Box Week, adults and children ages 10 and older (accompanied by an adult) are invited to build a birdhouse for breeding birds at the Essex County Environmental Center. Making a nesting place available at this time of year increases the chances of attracting a nesting songbird pair by spring. $6 per child and $8 per adult; Saturday at 10:30 a.m.; Roseland

I.Dance Love 4 the Arts Show! 

The award-winning Inspirational Dance Company, based in Maplewood, will perform their annual Love 4The Arts Show at Clinton Elementary School.  I.Dance’s competitive dance teams have performed at PNC Arts Center, SOPAC, Iselin Festival, BET Festival, Maplewood Womens Club and many more. Fun Djembe Class!

A dejembe is a West African rope-tuned drum played with bare hands that has been growing in popularity. The class will be led by Yahaya Kamate, a teacher at Alvin Ailey who is from the National Ballet of the Ivory Coast, Africa. Join in this exciting drum class, held at The Episcopal Church of Saint Andrew & Holy Communion. $10 per class; Sunday at 6:30 p.m.; South Orange

Bonus Monday Event:

Holiday Hike – Essex County South Mountain Reservation

Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to get outdoors while school is closed, and learn about wildlife in our local parks with New Jersey Audubon.  There is no specific agenda, so prepare for fun and varied habitats along the hiking trails of South Mountain Reservation.  The registered participants will meet in the Tulip Springs parking area off of Cherry Lane. $5 for NJAS members and $7 for non-members; Monday at 9:30 a.m; West Orange.
