Do You Leave Your Car Warming up in Your Driveway? [Poll]
Police say unattended car are easy targets for thieves.
With the wind chill making it feel close to zero degrees this week, it's tempting to start your car and leave it running in the driveway while you finish getting ready in the morning.
But consider yourself warned. Not only is this practice bad for the environment, it makes your car an easy target for thieves.
Besides, modern car engines don't need to be warmed up for more than a couple of minutes, according to Engine Warm-Up 101 on AOL Autos.

I take the risk not so much to warm up the car, but to have the interior warm when I get in. I did heed the warning and cleaned out my garage today so I can squeeze my car in there, although the risk of sideswiping the garage door and ripping off my mirror is probably much higher than it being stolen :)

Remote starters are not that expensive anymore, and they are a simple solution to the problem. Should a criminal find a way to open the door while it's warming up, it sets off the alarm, The moment they step on the brake to put the vehicle in gear, it shuts off the car. And yes, there are even more safeguards should they defeat the initial barriers. Anyone who believes that they must run their car for the sake of warmth, there are ways to minimize the risk .

@David, That is an excellent solution! I never even thought about a remote starter. I did'nt mean to sound selfish about the warmth, I actually warm it for my kids sake more than mine.

@MMS, I have no opinion either way regarding the warmth, that's your choice. All I'm saying is be safe.

I use the 2 key method, but that's mostly just so I can lock the house on my way out without having to turn off the engine and use those keys. I don't bother locking the car doors. My car is in the back of the house and my street is very isolated, so I'm not too concerned about theft.

2 keys. Start engine. Lock doors. Can equal = broken window. missing car. I do think that if one must do this and they have a garage, it's best to do it while the car is still in the garage to lower this risk. No matter what we do, no one is exempt from the risk (even sitting in the car while it's warming up).

I would think that car thieves looking for easy pickings will look for open doors and a quick getaway. Breaking windows takes time and makes noise. But what do I know! I hope I never find out.
