Top 10 Sports Moments of the Year

See which teams and players topped the list

It wouldn't be a normal year in Millburn if tennis and distance runners didn't top this list. However, this past year saw baseball and lacrosse return to relevance, while there was also a big improvement made by the girl's golf team and some noise made by the Miller wrestlers.

Here are the top sports 10 moments of the year in Millburn:

1. 10/26 - Millburn girls tennis is number one: The Millburn girls tennis team wins Tournament of Champions with a 4-1 victory over Red Bank Catholic capping a perfect 28-0 season, one of the best in the school's history. Maddie Stearns, Alex Stone, Jane Bary, Jenna Berkenkamp and Stephanie Chen Schmidt, along with Lauren Cohen and Pat Chau will go down as one of Millburn's legendary teams years from now.

2. 5/26 - Thrice as nice for boys tennis: Boys tennis wins Group 3 for a third consecutive season. The Miller boys tennis team won Group 3, this time beating Moorestown 4-1 in the finals. Rob Xie and the rest of the boys are poised for another run at it this spring.

3. 11/12 - Blake Udland wins Group 3 cross country: He clocked in a 15:47 and was the only runner to finish under 16 minutes. He went on to take 7th place at the Meet of Champions a week later.

4. 6/3 - Millburn baseball back on top: The Miller boys went from back-to-back losing seasons to winning the North II Group 3 state sectional championship in Brian Chapman's first season at the helm. They defeated Mendham 8-0 before losing in the Group 1 semis to Paramus.

5. 5/15 - Millburn baseball reaches Greater Newark Tournament finals: First they win a 8-inning game against Montclair in the quarters, then they rally from two runs down against the favored West Essex Knights to reach the finals.

6. 2/20 - Levin (152) and Gordon (160) win district titles: Simon Levin defeated Romario Herbert in the finals, getting a 10-5 win. Gabe Gordon defeated Emeka Udoye in finals, 8-0. Don't be surprised to see both of these guys do very well this winter in their senior years.

7. 5/31 - Miller girls golf from worst to first: No one saw this one coming, but the Miller girls won the season ending conference tournament at Essex Fells, and finished with an 11-1 regular season mark, tied for the North Jersey Girls Golf League championship. It was the best season in the school's history.

8. 5/6 - Udland holds off Cheserek: In the 4 x 1,600 relay at the county relay championships in Livingston, Blake Udland was able to maintain a 200-meter lead over nationally heralded runner Edward Cheserek, to give Millburn its sixth straight win in the event.

9. 5/24 - Millburn volleyball hosts a playoff game: The Miller boys had been a down trodden program for most of the last decade and shocked everyone with their play last season, ending with a home playoff game. The boys finished up 11-8.

10. 4/25 - Miller boys lacrosse outlasts St. Peter's Prep: It took three overtimes for Millburn to get the 5-4 win and improve to 7-1. In coach Bill McCutcheon's first season, the team was very impressive as they ended with their best ever record at 14-5.

Great picks for top 10 sports moments at MHS.
#8 . Blake Udland did have a wonderful anchor on the relay. However, I think some credit needs to be given to Dan Bier,Robert Stone, and Matt Deshaw for giving Blake a nice cushion to hold off America's finest runner - Edward Cheserek.

Jennie Smith's 26 point performance against Nutley in the girls' state basketball tournament deserves to be on this list.
