Township Looking into Installing Security Cameras
In addition to putting cameras at the stations, officials will look into placing them downtown.
Business Administrator Tim Gordon said Tuesday night that the township has already talked to one vendor and has discussions lined up with others about putting in surveillance cameras at the train stations.
The township is also looking at putting them in at various locations downtown Gordon said.
The cameras would not be for traffic enforcement but, rather, he said, for security.
Gordon’s comments came after a resident asked what the township was doing to make the Short Hills train station safer after last week’s carjacking that occurred at 6:20 a.m. on a weekday.
Millburn Police report that a commuter mugged and carjacked at the Short Hills train station by four men who had just stolen a Land Rover from a house on Slope Drive.
Two men in the Land Rover followed by two men in a 2002 Subaru pulled up to the Municipal Lot #3 at the Short Hills Train station, where, police said, they jumped from those cars and brandished firearms at a resident in a 2011 Mercedes Benz.
They demanded his wallet and his car and took off with both at high speeds and were witnessed by an off-duty police officer speeding through downtown Millburn a few minutes later.
The off-duty officer followed the cars and advised the police department of the whereabouts of the vehicles. The Subaru broke down and the suspects bailed out of that car and got into the other two and got away.
Gordon said he would talk to other vendors and bring the township committee a proposal in January.
In other business, the township committee spent three hours hearing testimony and deliberating on whether La Cucina di Clemenza should get a liquor license before denying the application.
They also said goodbye to Jim Suell, who attended his last committee meeting Tuesday night. For more on these stories, check back with Patch later today.

With the crime in town they spend a short time talking about cameras, and 3 hours on a liquor licence. Anything about the police staffing, or more patrols, or any update on how they have not caught anyone at all yet? Town council needs to realize what is important an focus on it rather than wasting time. They are doing nothing of value at all. They should be spending 3 hours on telling us how they will help keep the town safe from home break ins and armed carjackers. Police overtime, new hires, agressive enforcement, technology upgrades, bringing in extra county police, are they doing any of this? Mayor do-nothing should be ashamed of herself, and Tim Gordon should be fired for not staffing police.

What was the basis for denying a liquor license to La Cucina?

"The Committee sided with Millburn police officer Detective Lt. Keith Laverty who conducted the background check on the applicant, Donna Zecca, for the state Division of Alcohol Beverage Control.
Laverty testified that he believed Zecca was "a front" for "an undisclosed interest holder who cannot hold a liquor license." Laverty was referring to Zecca's husband, Joseph Zecca, who, Laverty reported, has a criminal record that includes convictions in 2007 on three counts of criminal restraint as well a 1988 conviction on drug possession charges. The convictions disqualify Joseph Zecca for holding a liquor license, Laverty said."

I wish the Township would consider utilizing Nixle. These instant notifications are sent to cell phones via txt message, as well as emails to your computer. The reverse 911 doesn't help much unless you are at home when the call comes in. Nixle provides information in real time, and can update situations as well.

Reverse 911 goes to my cell phone; I think you give them a number when you register?

I do volunteer work for my local police department. They instituted Nixle 2 years ago with much success. Nixle is actively promoted throughout the community with sign up opportunities at different locals, i.e. supermarkets, etc. The number of individuals signed up has increased significantly since inception.

Really? Security cameras in Millburn? Beyond the recent anecdotal evidence, can someone please provide some compelling statistics indicating the skyrocketing crime rate ... or shall we just shout hooray for the surveillance society! BTW: Security cameras don't prevent crime ...they just help identify the suspects after the fact.

For once I agree with Ms. Most.
