National Black Cat Appreciation Day: Friday, August 17

In honor of National Black Cat Appreciation Day on Friday, August 17th, I'd like to mention that the Wayne Township Animal Shelter currently has almost 20 black cats waiting for their forever homes.  Unfortunately, some have been at the shelter for quite awhile.

Have you ever heard of Black Cat or Black Dog Syndrome?  It’s the belief that dogs and cats with all black coats are harder to adopt into homes because people tend to associate these animals with negative things such as in movies where demonic dogs are usually black, and a black cat always seems to make an appearance in instances where bad luck, curses or death are to follow.  There are studies which show that many people find a black animal’s appearance menacing due to fears or superstition and as a result many animal shelters and rescue organizations find themselves with an abundance of black animals waiting longer to be adopted than other color variations.

If you decide to adopt a shelter animal into your heart and home, please check out the friendly, furry, BLACK faces just waiting to meet you at the Wayne Township Animal Shelter!  We’ve got quite a few of these black beauties just waiting for someone to give them a second chance at love!  They don’t know their fur is black so they don’t understand why they are being overlooked, they just continue to wait lonely and bored in their shelter cages for someone to love them unconditionally.

Won’t you break the silly superstitious cycle and adopt a black dog or cat today?  As the owner of a black dog (see attached picture of Bear) for 16 years, I can personally attest that they make the absolute best friend that you could ever have and they bring you nothing but good luck and love.

Thank you for supporting black cats! Isn't it so silly that people think they are bad luck. In addition to my black dog, I also had a black cat in my family growing up and he lived until almost 20! I considered myself very lucky to have had him and especially for that long! They are good luck for sure. :)

My beautiful black cat Alex, came to use 8 years ago.
He became a instant member of our family. He made sure
everyone was in at night. And made a point of greet you at the door
when ever anyone came home. He died 4 months ago with cancer.
He took a piece of my heart with him.I love you Alex today is your day.
THANK YOU!
