Planning Board Approves Gina's Bakery

The Planning Board approves a satellite store for the Montclair-based bakery.

Gina's Bakery will be coming to downtown Millburn. The Planning Board approved the bakery's application Wednesday night to open a satellite store. The bakery will open a retail store in the store once home to Signal Graphics, which moved to South Orange last month. No baking will be done on premises, and the baked goods will be brought by van each morning to the Millburn store. Brad Padden, business advisor for the bakery, said during Wednesday's meeting how the bakery has been at the Millburn Farmers Market for four years. During that time they have been one of the more popular vendors. "Our customers would ask us when we would be opening a store here," he said. The plan is for the bakery to be open five days each week. It will be open 8 …

Ask the Career Coach: Getting Noticed

How to differentiate yourself from the other candidates who submit their resume.

Dear Career Coach Lisa, How do you get your resume noticed? I have sent out many resumes after graduating from school last May and have not gotten many interviews yet. S.S., Short Hills This is a great follow up question to last week's column on Getting Your Resume through the Door. Although technology has played a significant role in changing how applicants are selected, the key to getting noticed is to networking your way into an organization. Applying for a position online is not enough. You need to determine if you know anyone at the company or if someone you know knows someone in the organization. With all of the online tools, the ability to search for connections is at our fingertips. The key is how you introduce yourself to a new …

PetSmart Opening Next Week

A soft opening is set for Monday, and the grand opening is March 20.

PetSmart is ready to open next week after months of preparing and reconstructing the building adjacent to Trader Joe's on Millburn Avenue. The pet store is set for a soft opening on Monday, and a grand opening celebration will be held on Saturday, March 20, according to a PetSmart spokeswoman. The Planning Board approved PetSmart in May along with Trader Joe's, which opened in early November. The PetSmart space will be 15,000 square feet. The two stores occupy where the former Whole Foods was at 187 Millburn Ave. In November, there was a protest in front of the site of the store when members of Labors Local 1153, part of Labors Eastern Region, said there was no union labor on the project. The issue, however, was resolved quickly.

Ask the Career Coach: Getting Your Resume Through the Door

How do you overcome the technology or screening process for resumes?

Dear Career Coach Lisa, What value has technology brought to the recruitment process? How do you work around the technology screening to get an interview? F.T., Millburn For larger companies, technology has played a significant role in changing how applicants are selected. The technology, referred to as Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS, is used to screen candidates for qualifications based on matching terminology (key words) on one's resume relative to the job requirements. It allows the corporate recruiter to see only the candidates that are a match based on the programmed criteria.  Many of the programming criteria for job boards prevent the resume from being viewed by the receiving company if it doesn't match enough of the job specific…

Maplewood Pet Shop Moving to Millburn

The shop will take the place of Millburn Feed in downtown Millburn.

Maplewood Pet Shop will close its doors by April 1 and move to downtown Millburn. The store has operated on Maplewood Avenue in Maplewood Village since 1946, and will replace a long-time Millburn pet store. Bill McClure has been the owner and operator of Maplewood Pet Shop since 1972. He was born and raised in Maplewood and still lives in the house he grew up in, along with his wife and business partner Candace. But McClure has found business to be a bit cramped at his Maplewood Avenue location. With just 1,300 square feet of space and no storage areas, there's no room to expand. When McClure heard that his colleagues—the Boile family—at Millburn Feed were retiring, he was interested in taking on their space across the street from Town …

Township Committee Delays Riverwalk Funding

The committee wants a contract with Downtown Millburn for repayment before approving the $600,000.

The Township Committee has put off voting on funding for Downtown Millburn's riverwalk project until it receives answers to its questions on repayment. The item to authorize spending $600,000 on the riverwalk was tabled Tuesday night after a lengthy discussion about how Downtown Millburn would repay the money with its federal grant for the project. There were no representatives from Downtown Millburn at Tuesday's meeting to answer the questions. Downtown Millburn has proposed to construct a "riverwalk" along Main Street leading to the Paper Mill Playhouse. The walkway, which is an enhanced sidewalk with pavers and lighting, would not actually follow the river. Downtown Millburn secured a federal grant money to cover the cost of …
