Down the block, Signal Graphics has closed in Millburn and moved to South Orange. They're located at 15 Village Plaza in South Orange. Gina's Bakery of Montclair has submitted an application to the Planning Board to move into the storefront. Schultz Exclusive Fur has moved, but only temporarily. Ask the Career Coach: Getting Your Resume Through the Door

How do you overcome the technology or screening process for resumes?

Dear Career Coach Lisa, What value has technology brought to the recruitment process? How do you work around the technology screening to get an interview? F.T., Millburn For larger companies, technology has played a significant role in changing how applicants are selected. The technology, referred to as Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS, is used to screen candidates for qualifications based on matching terminology (key words) on one's resume relative to the job requirements. It allows the corporate recruiter to see only the candidates that are a match based on the programmed criteria.  Many of the programming criteria for job boards prevent the resume from being viewed by the receiving company if it doesn't match enough of the job specific…

Maplewood Pet Shop Moving to Millburn

The shop will take the place of Millburn Feed in downtown Millburn.

Maplewood Pet Shop will close its doors by April 1 and move to downtown Millburn. The store has operated on Maplewood Avenue in Maplewood Village since 1946, and will replace a long-time Millburn pet store. Bill McClure has been the owner and operator of Maplewood Pet Shop since 1972. He was born and raised in Maplewood and still lives in the house he grew up in, along with his wife and business partner Candace. But McClure has found business to be a bit cramped at his Maplewood Avenue location. With just 1,300 square feet of space and no storage areas, there's no room to expand. When McClure heard that his colleagues—the Boile family—at Millburn Feed were retiring, he was interested in taking on their space across the street from Town …

Township Committee Delays Riverwalk Funding

The committee wants a contract with Downtown Millburn for repayment before approving the $600,000.

The Township Committee has put off voting on funding for Downtown Millburn's riverwalk project until it receives answers to its questions on repayment. The item to authorize spending $600,000 on the riverwalk was tabled Tuesday night after a lengthy discussion about how Downtown Millburn would repay the money with its federal grant for the project. There were no representatives from Downtown Millburn at Tuesday's meeting to answer the questions. Downtown Millburn has proposed to construct a "riverwalk" along Main Street leading to the Paper Mill Playhouse. The walkway, which is an enhanced sidewalk with pavers and lighting, would not actually follow the river. Downtown Millburn secured a federal grant money to cover the cost of …

Ask the Career Coach: Dodging the Axe

Get tips for job retention strategies.

Dear Career Coach Lisa, My company is preparing for another round of layoffs and my department does not have much work. I think I may be in danger of losing my job. What do I do? S.T., Short Hills Think about what you do and what value you deliver for your company. How are you perceived by co-workers, your boss and management? Are you a "go to" player that can provide answers when needed, understands how to manipulate data to identify trends, able to generate new potential revenue stream or contain cost? Can you suggest some work projects that your organization will benefit from? For example, create templates for commonly requested documents or presentations; write a user's guide or checklist for repetitive projects to ensure constancy and…

Township Officials: Stop & Shop Application Missed a Step

They believe the Board of Adjustment's approval was needed before the county approved the application.

Township officials are saying "not so fast" about the county Planning Board approving an application for Stop & Shop to move to a Millburn Avenue site. The Essex County Planning Board approved driveway access from the former Saks Fifth Avenue site onto Millburn Avenue last fall. The site itself is in Springfield. The plan for the grocery store owned by Royal Ahold to open at the site was approved there after a court battle. Because the driveway is located in Millburn and Essex County, it needs approval from those two zoning boards. The Millburn Board of Adjustment would review the application. But Millburn officials have yet to receive an application from Royal Ahold and only learned about the plans when they received paperwork from county…

Bakery Could Come to Downtown Millburn

The owners of Montclair-based Gina's Bakery have proposed to open a retail shop in the former Signal Graphic space.

Residents who want a bakery in downtown Millburn may soon get their wish. The owners of Gina's Bakery in Montclair have filed an application with the Planning Board to move into the space recently vacated by Signal Graphics at 358 Millburn Ave. Signal Graphics has moved to South Orange. The new bakery would be called Crust and Crumb and would only be a retail location. No baking would be done in the Millburn shop. All of it would be done in Montclair. The township planning staff is reviewing the application to deem it ready to be reviewed by the Planning Board. No hearing date has been set, although it could happen on March 17. Gina's Bakery is one of the vendors at the Millburn Farmers Market each summer. They make artisan-style baked …

I adore Bella's Bakery. I did a piece on them a year ago. I'm a big fan of the cinnamon cupcakes. The lede in my story comes from the business survey. One of the top things people wanted downtown was a bakery.  more ›

Committee Approves Downtown Assessment Increase

The assessment increase funds the Downtown Millburn budget, and it's the first hike in 18 years.

One downtown building owner raised questions about the increase in the special improvement district assessment, but the Township Committee unanimously approved the increase Tuesday night. The Township Committee approved an increase in the assessment from $160,000 to $195,000 when it approved the Downtown Millburn budget last fall. Tuesday night the committee held a public hearing on the division of the assessment between the properties located in the special improvement district. William Lipkin, a doctor who is a new owner of a Millburn Avenue building, said he didn't know about the assessment until he received a notice from the township about the public hearing. "I came here tonight seeking an education," he said. "Nothing ever told me it…

Ask the Career Coach: Job Search Struggle

A recent college graduate is having a hard time with his job search.

Dear Career Coach Lisa, As a recent college grad I am feeling completely lost in my job search. Why is this so difficult? J.D., Millburn Think about when you were in college and a semester ended. There was a pattern established with your class schedule, how you engaged your classmates and professors, and what was expected of you as outlined in the course syllabus. You knew what you needed to accomplish in order to succeed. Completing the assignments, research papers, labs and internships was a priority. Juggling responsibilities of your social life, possibly work, and getting good grades was your focus. You had flexibility regarding how you juggled the demands as long as you delivered the results. How successful you were depended on how …
