Voter turnout was light in Wednesday’s Board of Education election in Millburn Short-Hills -- but as bad as it's been some years. While nearby towns of Maplewood and South Orange opened their polls at 2 p.m., Millburn opened voting and 7 a.m. and didn’t close until 9 p.m. Yet voters only trickled in during the morning and afternoon said longtime Millburn resident and poll worker Roslyn Fink. “We’ll get more when people get off from work,” she said in the mid-afternoon at the library polling place. “We didn’t expect much turnout in the morning. I know Millburn, and when the 6 p.m. train …
Millburn-Short Hills residents on Wednesday elected political newcomers Jean Pasternak and Regina Truitt, along with incumbent Jeff Waters, to serve on the Millburn Board of Education and passed a $76.5 million budget that raises the school tax levy by 1.35 percent. Some voters said it was a difficult choice – all the candidates are smart and qualified, but when it came down to it, they voted for candidates who had maintained they would be the most fiscally conservative. Of the five candidates vying for those seats, incumbent Debra Fox and challenger Jay Mattlin were the only two who said …
It’s a big week in Millburn with Election Day on Wednesday – voters go to the polls to fill three seats on the school board. With two incumbents and three challengers, there’s a real race and candidates have hit the streets, coffee shops, library, school board meetings and carpool lines getting their messages across. You don’t have to be a parent of school-age children to be interested in this election – the Millburn Board of Education adopts a budget that determines the school district’s share of a property owner’s taxes. Voters will also vote on a budget that would increase their school tax…
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Debbie Fox and I am running for re-election.  I am completing my first term on the Board.  I live in South Mountain in Millburn and I have two children who attend South Mountain School, a 5th grader and a 4th grader.  I have been a township resident for 12 years.  I was a HS teacher and an adjunct professor.   Having taught gives me an advantage as I am able to see both sides of the issues.  After I left teaching, I have had a 30-year career in Market Research giving me the corporate prospective as well.  I worked for a large advertising and PR …
I wonder how many of you have had this experience.  You meet somebody you don’t know, somebody who doesn’t live here.  Somebody who is familiar with New Jersey or even someone who lives in another part of the state.  She or he asks you where you live, and you tell them.  What do they say?  Well, most of the time, in my experience, the person will tell you she or he has never heard of Millburn or asks you what exit it’s nearest.  Perhaps they’ll be familiar with the Short Mills Mall.  But if they have heard of Millburn/Short Hills, most likely they will say something like “Oh, that town has …
Let me tell you about me: I’ve lived in Millburn 13 years; raised a family of four – children ages 9 to 18.  (First one leaving for college!) Each has different needs and we’ve been able to meet them in every way, including educationally, being in this area. We are fortunate for the choice. Arrived from London where I lived and worked for 10 years. I became Managing Director, JP Morgan, a major Wall Street firm, but not the traditional route. Started in ops, moved to corporate finance, and then became executive business manager overseeing $500 million business with 150 people in many jobs …
I have been actively involved with the Millburn Township Public Schools for 10 years, having held a wide variety of positions in the PTO at all levels: elementary, middle school and the high school. I am the immediate past President of the Millburn Middle School PTO where I focused on improving and increasing communication between parents and the Executive Board.  I also served on the Hartshorn PTO Executive Board, chaired multiple PTO committees, and am the current Board of Ed Reporter for Millburn High School PTO.  One of my proudest achievements is the creation and coordination of the …
When I joined the Board in the spring of 2008 we were facing some significant challenges.  The economy was beginning a severe nosedive and district finances and state aid came under severe pressure.Shortly afterward, I was asked to assume the Chairmanship of the Finance Committee. Working closely with our senior administrators and fellow board members, I authored a financial model designed to provide significant tax relief by returning excess surplus to taxpayers in a thoughtful, phased manner while ensuring that adequate funds would be available to fulfill educational priorities. We …
