Millburn's elementary school families and school district staff donated 140 boxes of food in the annual Thanksgiving Food Drive sponsored by the Community Outreach Committee of the Millburn-Short Hills Conference of Parents and Teachers. The program is coordinated with the assistance of the Millburn-Short Hills Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Millburn Fire Department and the Millburn Board of Education. It was a turkey-lovers heaven in Wyoming Presbyterian Church on Wednesday. Volunteers from the church were preparing the turkey and sides for Thanksgiving dinner with the Salvation Army in Newark on Thursday. They expect to serve 400 needy families. Volunteers annually spend the week preparing the food and then they take it to Newark on Thursday to serve it. Newark Mayor Cory Booker attended a year ago to help serve.
Each year the the Millburn-Short Hills Clergy Association sponsors and interfaith Thanksgiving service. This year's service was at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, and Rabbi Karen Perolman from Temple B'nai Jeshurun gave the sermon. It's the so called busiest travel day of the year Wednesday, and NJ Transit is offering early getaway service for those who plan to get home a little earlier. Millburn-Short Hills is served by two train stations on the Morris & Essex lines with service to Hoboken and Midtown Direct trains to New York Penn Station. It also has bus service on Millburn Avenue to Newark. More than one million New Jersey residents are expected to travel this Thanksgiving, which is a 11.2 percent increase from a year ago, according to AAA. The organization's prediction would be the first increase in Thanksgiving holiday travel in New Jersey since 2005, according to a press release. AAA also predicts a 11.4 percent increase in the number of people traveling across the country, which is 42.2 million. Thanksgiving comes once a year, but you can get a taste of the holiday every day at the Millburn Deli. The deli is most famous for the sloppy joe, but its second best seller is the Gobbler. The sandwich features turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce (homemade in November and December), mayonnaise and lettuce. Andrew Morgan, of the deli, explains the history of the Gobbler and shows how to make it in the video below.
