It was a year marked by destruction downtown when flooding ravaged Millburn. The hurricane, along with an earthquake and snow storms made this year like no other. But along with those scenes, our best photos of 2011 also captured the essence of Millburn and Short Hills -- a high school football game, senior prom, an auto show, and behind the scenes at the Paper Mill Playhouse.
As if to make amends for the nasty weather that highlighted 2011, the awe and beauty of Mother Nature was on full display over the past year, giving us an occasional break from cursing the bad weather to drink in the wonders of its beauty. In March, a full moon experts said would be the largest in more than 20 years did not disappoint. The so-called "Super Moon" filled our eyes like big pizza pies on the night of March 19, and dozens of readers from around the world submitted their own photographs of the lunar phenomenon, creating a one-of-a-kind gallery of the occurrence. In August, and …
A walk in the South Mountain Reservation this week was an excerise in climbing, hurdling or walking off road to get around fallen trees and branches, leftover from the freak end-of-October snowstorm. Here are some photos of the main walking road in the reservation taken this week. Despite the downed trees, there were still many runners and dogwalkers on beautiful day. If you're interested in helping clear paths in the reservation, see story for more infomation.
After days of seemingly endless gray skies and rain, the sun broke through the clouds on Sunday and shined on the Millburn Street Fair and Art Festival. Artists, musicians, craftsmen, dancers and shoppers filled Millburn Avenue and Spring Street Sunday. The festival was sponsored by the Millburn-Short Hills Chamber of Commerce and Investors Savings Bank. For more, see our gallery of pictures from the festival.
Harvey Fierstein and Alan Menken, along with the Disney Theatrical Group and the Paper Mill Playhouse, recently shared some of the work they’ve been doing to give "Newsies’" its theatrical debut in Millburn next month. Come September 15, the stage version of the 1992 cult movie by the same name will premier at the Paper Mill Playhouse, bringing the music by the Oscar-winning composer Menken and a new book by Tony-winning actor Fierstein to life on the stage. Both Menken and Fierstein were in attendance at a "Newsies" Meet and Greet in New York City's Times Square on Tuesday morning.  "Newsies…
The Chatham Community Band performed on Wednesday inside the Bauer Community Center at Taylor Park as part of its summer concert series. This concert was the band's final performance of the series. Here's a video so you can experience a little of the concert yourself.
For seven years, Livingston resident Susan Larney has been sending box loads of personal items and letters to people she doesn’t even know. This dedication is focused on the soldiers serving overseas as she supports her favorite charity, ANYSOLDIER.COM.  This year for her birthday, Larney rented out the Florham Park Roller Rink for an evening of skating and celebration, asking that in lieu of gifts, the attending families bring items that she will send to the troops. The charity provides support for military personnel stationed abroad through letters of support and items they miss from home…
Millions of people watched the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, both in the city and across the river in New Jersey, and NBC's coverage attracted its most viewers in 11 years. According to Nielsen’s estimates, 8.6 million people tuned in to the NBC broadcast at 9 p.m. So if you stayed here and enjoyed Millburn’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July and Fireworks show instead of either braving the throngs or watching it on T.V., you might enjoy these photos of the big show. Millburn photographer Chris Jorda, who opened a studio on Main Street last year, had a prime vantage point at a …
Hundreds planted themselves on the turf of MHS's football field on this Fourth of July, where a sort of tailgating took place before the fireworks.  Awaiting darkness and an explosive end to an old-fashioned, fun-filled day, spectators sat on blankets, ate dinner, played sports and bopped beach balls around the field. An array of glow-in-the-dark accessories were available for sale, and a 50/50 raffle was held before the fireworks lit up the night sky. Lucky Millburn resident Darmadi Khond won $714. Please enjoy photos from the evening's festivities, and feel free to add your own Independence…
It was a warm and muggy July 4th, but that didn't stop anyone from having a good old-fashioned great time at the afternoon activities in Taylor Park. From getting dizzy on the whirlwind ride to slippin' and slidin' on the slip n' slide to racing some rubber duckies down the river, both kids and grown-ups had fun. Rock climbing, pony rides, train rides, competitive watermelon eating and bungee bouncing were just a few of the favorite activities. Just cooling off in front of a fan was a popular sport as well. Photographer Alexandra Birnbaum captured the day in pictures for Patch. Check out her …
It was a day of old fashioned, patriotic fun in Millburn with a flag ceremony, the Patriot Award and the bike parade in the morning -- with more fun on hand in the afternoon and evening. Enjoy our photos from this morning and enjoy the rest of your holiday. Check back later for more photos. And feel free to add your own! Happy Fourth of July!
It was a warm summer night as the Millburn High School seniors gathered in front of the school to board the buses to the prom. All colors and styles were on display. From short skirts to formal floor length gowns in bright colors to the black tuxedos with small hints of style in the cummerbund, were there to be seen. And, of course, the proud parents, snapping away. Trying to save a moment in time on a digital chip as their children straddle two worlds.
Like most people, I bought a car because I needed one. I needed to drive to work, the supermarket, family trips, soccer games. On Sunday afternoon, however, Millburn was filled with guys who bought their cars simply  because they wanted them - and not necessarily to drive.  The annual classic car show brought out a wide range of vintage car owners who were happy to talk about their rides. The range of cars ran from really old (turn of the century) to not that old (2008) to the really cool (one word - Batmobile).  One of 20 or so Batmobiles that were created from the original George Barris TV …
"Curtains," you should know, is a play about the theatre. Shortly into Act One, the writers and producers of the play within a play sing their rebuttal to the critics who have panned their production with a song that asks, "What kind of man would take a job like that?"   Well, in this case, the answer is me. Luckily, this time around it's a pretty enjoyable chore.  The plot revolves around a murder mystery, but I'll take the suspense out of this review right away: This show is a whole lot of fun for anyone who enjoys good music, big production numbers, snappy dialogue and sets that would look…
In the daylight hours following news that America's number one enemy was killed by U.S. forces, a slow trickle of residents visited the Eagle Rock September 11 Memorial in West Orange to pay respects. Arriving one at a time, each visitor somberly made their way to the stone and metal monument, to gaze across the mist at the New York City skyline that was so dramatically altered on that September day nearly 10 years ago. The monument's focal point is a statue of a little girl clutching a teddy bear. Behind her stands a large statue of an open book, in which Essex County's 57 victims of the …
If you're going to be in the audience for Paper Mill's production of "Curtains,"  one thing you should know is that the actors are having as much fun as you are.  Jumping into a mix of big production numbers, sardonic comedy and murder (and that's just in the first scene), the cast relishes the job.  Backstage, one can feel the enthusiasm of the cast members as they do what every performer does before a show:  Costumes, wigs, makeup, stretches, moments of meditation. Unlike the ill-fated play within a play that is produced on stage, this is a cast that looks forward to getting out there and …
As technology evolves so do the holidays. Now when someone can’t make it across the country to attend a Passover Seder or Easter dinner, not only can they be there in spirit, they can be there virtually as well. Skype, FaceTime, OooVoo and other video chat programs give everyone a seat  at the table, even if they're halfway around the world or just stuck at the office. My brother-in-law, who was unable to get here from Boston last night, got to sit at our Passover table – or rather, on our Passover table – for a little while during our Seder last night via Apple’s FaceTime. The kids had a …
The weather was gray and chilly, but that didn't stop the kids from seeking quality time with the Easter Bunny.  Kids brought their baskets to the annual Egg Hunt on Saturday, which was sponsored by  the American Legion Post 140, Millburn Fire Department, Millburn Police Department, Millburn/Short Hills Chamber of Commerce and the Millburn Recreation Department. Kids second grade and younger were allowed to hunt eggs and pose with the guest of honor -- and went home with an assortment of chocolate eggs and bunnies. Parents braced the brisk temperatures because after all, as one mom said ,  "…
As crews tear down the landmark Chanticler and its more than 150 years of history, each layer demolished reveals a part of its past – the maroon and gold patterned carpet, framed paneling, faded wallpaper. Stairs that now lead nowhere. From the front of the building while the marble walls and entryway were still intact, you could almost hear the swing bands playing, almost see couples dancing and almost feel the excitement of the thousands of weddings and receptions that filled the halls through the years. If you grew up in the area, it’s likely you have a memory or two of the Chanticler: a …
