On Monday, January 21st, Congregation B'nai Israel is hosting an afternoon of community service and learning.  Known as “Mitzvah Day,” this annual event is being held on Martin Luther King Day – A Day On, Not Off – and is open to the local community.

Over 30 organizations will be represented with hands-on activities and information to learn how individuals can get involved and make a difference.  The event will begin promptly at 2:00 p.m. with a special singing presentation by the Newark Boys Chorus School.

Participants will have the chance to become a bone marrow donor by getting a cheek swabbed, learn about becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister, make meals for the homeless, meet a trained seeing eye dog, support Israeli soldiers through a bake sale, support local neighbors through Down The Block, learn how to help the Arthritis Foundation, the Lupus Foundation, Jewish Family Services and so much more.

Collections range from books and DVDs to shoes, old towels and sports equipment. The program is from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at Congregation B'nai Israel, located at 160 Millburn Avenue. No pre-registration is required. Admission is free; there are nominal suggested donations for a few of the activities that support various organizations.

For a complete list of organizations and collections or if you have any questions, please contact Lori Katzman at 973-379-3811.
