DiVincenzo will hear Army Corps of Engineers plans for water storage on South Mountain Reservation during major weather events.
The Mayors along the Rahway River in Essex and Union Counties will present to Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo on Thursday a report on the potential for storm water storage in the South Mountain Reservations during major weather events. Mayor Sandra Haimoff and the Mayors’ Council on Rahway River Flood invited Joseph DiVincenzo to the presentation of the plan being developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which has preliminarily estimated through its hydrology assessment that up to two feet of storm water could be stored behind natural dams in the South Mountain Reservation. The Mayors will hear the plan for the first time earlier in the day Thursday when the Corps presents the plan to the council, Haimoff said, and Leo …

Mayor Sandra Haimoff will run for re-election to the Township Committee in November.
Mayor Sandra "Sandy" Haimoff will seek re-election to the township committee in November. The republican mayor has been endorsed by the local republican party and has been on the Township Committee nine years. She was on the Board of Education for 12 years prior to that. She has also served on the Planning Board, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Hartshorn Arboretum board, the Environmental commission and was president of the Hartshorn PTA. The last year was a particularly difficult one to be serving the Township Committee, what with Tropical Storm Irene flooding downtown and nearby Washington and South Mountain neighborhoods, and leaving the town without water or electricity for a week or more. Then there was the October snowstorm, …

Mayor and governor have fun with their images
Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondent's Club show. Click on the video above to see the Cory and Chris…

President Barack Obama made big headlines with his announcement this week.
President Barack Obama made national headlines this week when he came out in support of gay marriage during an interview on ABC News. Obama said he has changed his stance on the issue and said, for him, personally, "I think same-sex couples should be able to get married." Reporters at ABC called the statement historical. Obama's remarks came just after North Carolina formally banned gay marriage. Some critics have said the president may have come out for gay marriage for politcal reasons, in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election, but others say his sentiments are sincere. Was it appropriate for President Obama to stand up in support of gay marriage? What do you think?

President made his historic pronouncement during an interview with ABC News.
President Barack Obama has publically come out in support of same sex marriage, the first time in history that a sitting U.S. president has ever done so. Obama gave the news to ABC News' Robin Roberts in an interview that will air on ABCs “Good Morning America" on Thursday. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to …

Statewide, 82.2 percent of NJ graduates are passing the High School Proficiency Assessment
As Gov. Chris Christie proposed changing the tests New Jersey students need to pass in order to graduate, the state Department of Education released data showing just 8 of 10 graduating seniors are passing the current test. (Editor’s Note: Those numbers are higher in districts like Livingston and Millburn, which scored 98.2 percent and 97.4 percent respectively.) Christie on Monday unveiled a plan to replace the High School Proficiency Assessment with end-of-course exams in language arts and math. The HSPA only measures skills at an 8th grade level, the governor said. The state may also recommend science and social studies tests. The next day, the DOE released data showing the percentage of 2011 graduates in each district who passed the …
