Local NJ Residents Support Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund in a Whole New Way

Over the years we have taken alot of ribbing from comedians and New Yorkers who get great enjoyment by poking fun at our "Garden State." Sure, we can be opinionated, dogmatic, pushy, tough, speak with heavy Jersey accents and even sport big hair and long nails. But the truth is the polar opposite of these generalizations.

In reality, New Jersey has some of the most well educated and affluent residents per capita compared to most states. It has beautifully diverse geography including low mountains and sandy beaches that sit proudly abutting the Atlantic Ocean.

So when Hurricane Sandy ravaged through our great state wreaking havoc in it’s wake, I think the world may have been a bit suprised by our resolve to come together to assist those in need. Many of us have collected coats, blankets, water, toys, and other critical items that were drowned out by the tides. Many of us also donated time and money to help victims get the resources they so desperately need. 

Yogi’s Putting Their Money Where Their Hearts Are

But yesterday, I took part in a whole different type of outreach. I practiced yoga with more than 250 other yogi’s in the Atlantic City Convention Center in Atlantic City, NJ. The word yoga means "union." It’s about the union of the mind and the body, the body and the spirit and the union of people.  

Practitioners from all over New Jersey came together and spent 3 hours sending out positive thoughts, prayers and energy to all New Jerseyans adversley affected by Sandy. "Jersey Girls, Men and Children" practiced "asanas," shared stories, collected toys --and --yes raised some serious money to benefit the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund started by Govenor Christie and the First Lady. So go ahead and make fun of me because I am a Jersey Girl, but I couldn't imagine being any prouder of my community.
