Rothko Art Talk Draws Big Crowd

More than 150 people turn out to see Mark Rothko's daughter discuss her father's life and art.

A talk by daughter, Kate, drew more than 150 to the Millburn Library last week, who came to learn more about the abstract impressionist's life and art.

The Millburn Art Advisory Committee, the Millburn Library and the Brooklyn College Alumni Association hosted the talk and were pleased with Rothko's warm manner and fascinating discussion.

"The response to the event (on a holiday week with many people away) was so gratifying and positive," said Art Advisory Committee Chairwoman Laraine Barach. "A great social evening of Art 'presentation' and discussion."

The event drew a variety of people, from Millburn Mayor Sandra Haimoff and Library Trustee James Suell to artists and art educators and gallery owners to alums of Brooklyn College.

Dr. Kate Rothko was accompanied by her husband, author and professor Ilya Prizel and her brother Christopher Rothko, head of the Rothko Foundation. Christopher Rothko helped his sister with the presentation about their father, who commited suicide when she was a teenager and he was a child, forcing the siblings into legal battle over his estate and his art collection that revealed one of the art world's biggest scandals, showing how executors of his will had sold his paintings for far less than they were worth to a gallery that stood to make a lot of money from them.

Kate Rothko makes very few appearances these days, Barach said, but told the committee, she would be happy to come back to Millburn.
