Sweet & Sophisticated …Designing the perfect bathroom for a little girl

Timeless design, lots of storage and whimsical style are the key elements in creating a space that that she'll never outgrow.

This sunny buttercup-colored bathroom was part of a larger whole house renovation in Westfield, NJ.  Designed for the homeowner’s young daughter, the goal was to create a space that she loves now and will stand the test of time.

Classic foundation

We began this bathroom renovation by creating a timeless neutral foundation with cream cabinetry and millwork, ivory Botticino marble tiles and contrasting black marble countertops. We moved the toilet from under the window to open the space to create a lower bench area with pull out bins. This will (hopefully!) cut down on the clutter of make up and hair products as she reaches her teen years. The stone top continues from the sink area to the bench to allow it to function as extra countertop space or a bench.

Because it’s an average-sized 5’ by 8’ bathroom we opened up floor space a bit by minimizing the size of cabinetry. You can see the drawers on each side of the vanity are stepped back and the bench seating area steps back again. This also adds lovely detail without great expense in the cost of the vanity. The cabinetry and trim are painted with the same Benjamin Moore Dove Wing to maintain visual continuity in the small space.

Botticino brick tiles continue into the shower with a mosaic accent border of black and blue stone around the top as well as in the shower niche that houses soap and shampoo.

Feminine flair

The striking trellis pattern on the walls uses Benjamin Moore’s Weston Flax yellow as the base, with ivory and black dot faux finish that picks up on the mosaic details seen in the shower. This little girl is ten now, but as she grows the walls can simply be painted to complement a grown-up color scheme.

No detail was left unturned with sconces that have a pedal-like detail to pick up on a little girl’s sensibility. The sheers in this room provide privacy and have the whimsy of a black wavelike detail at the base and contrasting yellow border to pick up on the wall colors.

This bathroom is currently featured in DesignNJ magazine’s annual Soothing Baths issue August/September 2013.
