Idling is Filthy and Selfish so Don't Do it!!

Engine idling is not only illegal, it is bad for your health, bad for the environment, and bad for your car.

Consider the following:

Ø  Vehicle emissions are more harmful to children than adults. Reasons for this include children’s faster breathing rates, higher absorption rate of most toxins, and their shorter stature places them closer to the tailpipes.

Ø  Re-starting your car consumes approximately only 15 running seconds worth of gas, therefore turning off the ignition when stationary and re-starting when necessary saves gas.

Ø  Idling for more than a few minutes is illegal per NJ state laws NJAC 7:27-14, 15 and NJSA 39:3-70.2.

Ø  Idling is actually harmful to your vehicle, compared to turning off and restarting the motor. Accessories can be used with the engine off by turning the ignition to the ‘ACC’ position.

While we are on the subject, here are some more gas-saving green tips:

1.              Purchase a vehicle with low emissions and high MPG: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm has emissions and fuel economy ratings on all new AND prior model year vehicles

2.              Keep your vehicle in good repair, tires properly inflated, and wheels aligned

3.              Use cruise control on the highway (though never in the rain)

4.              Turn off the engine if you will sit for more than 15 seconds

5.              It is not necessary to start the engine to open windows, play the radio, use the 12 volt power outlet, etc. – just turn the ignition key to the ‘on’ or ‘acc’ position

6.              Control your speed as much as possible with the accelerator (decelerator) pedal, instead of the brakes

7.              Air conditioning only saves gas while cruising 45+ MPH, not in local driving

8.              Slow down! Every 5 MPH above 55 decreases MPG by 3 - 4%

9.              Remove cartop carriers when not in use

10.           Remove unnecessary cargo from your vehicle; tools and liquids are common culprits
