Residents Apply For First Millburn Same-Sex Marriage License

"The separate, but not equal status of civil unions is now behind us," Shayne Miller said after he applied for the first same-sex marriage license Tuesday.

Township residents Shayne Austin Miller and Christopher Haught became one of the first couples in Millburn to apply for a same-sex marriage license Tuesday morning.

“Today is an exciting day for us and for thousands of committed gay and lesbian couples in New Jersey,” remarked Shayne Miller who also serves as Director of Press and Public Relations for Millburn’s Paper Mill Playhouse.

Mayor Sandra Haimoff, who has performed several civil unions, said she would be "delighted" to perform any same-sex marriages for residents in town who asked her.

The couple plans to wed before a judge in the next few weeks and celebrate with family and friends in Millburn as a result of Friday’s State Supreme Court ruling upholding a trail judge’s decision to allow civil marriages for same-sex couples to start on Oct. 21.

Under New Jersey law, all people wishing to be married must file a marriage license application at least 72 hours in advance of the ceremony. Any couples who filed the appropriate state-required paperwork on Saturday will be able to be legally married Tuesday.
